The Homeland Security Department's Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency apparently possesses so many drones it can't keep them all flying, according to the
Washington Times. The Department's inspector general also found that the border agency doesn't have enough ground support for the planes, or a plan for missions. What to do after realizing this? Order more drones, of course.
Customs and Border Protection's Office of Air and Marine has nine drones for patrolling the sea and the borders. It has enough drones to easily crank out 10,000 hours of flight time, but it's only turned out 4,000 in a one year period. The agency's budget problems are so bad they may need to scrap future flights. Oh, and for reasons unknown a tenth drone is on its way despite the budgetary problems.
The investigators said the agency doesn't possess the dedicated budget to maintain the drones, and has had to redirect money from other agency programs to keep the drones running. Meanwhile, the agency said it's not planning on adopting any more drones, and is requesting a budget capable of supporting its drone program.
