Florida Pastor Terry Jones was last seen
burning Qurans, which was perfectly legal but not considered a particularly diplomatic idea by the Pentagon. His latest protest stunt involves
hanging President Obama in effigy on a home-made gallows outside his church, and here Jones is on shakier legal ground,
since the Secret Service is now investigating.
In an interview, Jones claimed that his hanging Obama effigy is a productive way to influence the electoral discussion: he says that there's a need to be controversial because "the American people are somewhat numb...to normal rhetoric."
He denied the protest incited violence, saying it was meant to urge Americans to "peaceful" action, and he also denied that his protest had racist implications: "we are not looking at him as a black man. He is not black; he is not white."
