The National Review Online's Ian Tuttle has picked up on a noticeable trend: you can't call President Barack Obama articulate, bright, or even cool, according to some liberal pundits. Why? Because it's racist, that's why.
At the heart of the problem are racial stereotypes. Tuttle gives the example of a Mitt Romney slogan: "Obama Isn't Working." The slogan is a call-back to Margaret Thatcher's line "Labour Isn't Working" campaign. But some interpreted Romney's slogan as racial stereotyping.
Tuttle outlines a few other scenarios where the specter of racism is raised: Joe Wilson's "You lie!" moment in 2009, criticism of Obama's health care reform, even Obama winning his election thanks to the youth "because they're not as racist as the previous generations," according to Michael Moore. But the absurdity of invoking racism is a part of the point, Tuttle writes:
The Left hears so many "dog whistles" in today's public discourse that one fears to say anything at all. And that's the point. Liberals use the accusation of racism as a cudgel to cow political opponents.
