Of course raising it will cause prices of everything to rise and coupled with Obamacare, unemployment will be hit harder. May 3 DrFunkenstein v Yes, it should The minimum pay for any employee should not be less than 50 times that of the highest paid employee. I know it's terrible to some people that one person is only allowed to be worth 50 times that of the people that actually make the money for the company but sadly this is how the world should work. Nowadays we have most corporations where the lowest paid full time employee barely makes 1/400 that of the highest paid and that poor CEO has to pay a lower tax rate than that lowest paid employee. u May 14 bleakoutlook That's a very narrow minded statement. Educated people get fired from their jobs sometimes too and minimum wage jobs are the only thing available. And for those with learning disabilities who work? Are they losers too? You're looking at this like its completely black and white when its far from it. Post @bleakoutlook

u May 15 tomincali the gov is causing most of the problem with wages. they keep bringing in so many people that some employers have dropped wages. gov is already in the mix, easy to see by all the out of work citizens yet they still bring in over 1.5 million people that makes all matter worst. May 15 Bill2E @tomincali Agreed, and the government overpays everyone employed. Cut government employees by 50% and cut wages for Government employees to make it less attractive. B1 Post @Bill2E
u May 15 tomincali @Bill2E you should work on something being build by gov.they hire so many guys they trip over each other. did a job and they hired guys to check the temp of our water jugs. construction workers had water boys, even brought in air conditioned trailers for our breaks. u May 3 URBS v No, it shouldn't The minimum wage is a farce. The people working at minimum wage always come out the losers. The companies are not going to absorb the loss in profit so the cost is passed on and usually more is passed on than was added so ultimately the people that were to be helped by the higher minimum wage end up being hurt by the higher cost of living. Post
May 2 jeffreyknee v No, it shouldn't NO! There's no minimum wage law in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland --- and they're in better shape compared to those that do in Europe (France, Spain, Greece, Italy). The rush of illegal immigrants is also a problem in min wage nations, like those above and the U.S. Forget about a "living wage" too! Never in history was in normal for a sole breadwinner to support everyone in the household; everybody worked in the family to survive including women and kids. True after WWII there was a labor shortage and American men were paid more and could support the house solo. But women wanted to work and that brought the labor pool back up where it usually is, balanced. Post

u Apr 29 fraps v No, it shouldn't There should be no minimum wage. It only hurts the young and inexperienced. They were introduced in the 30's with other laws. Some were explicitly written to protect white jobs. Blacks could not get a job by willing to work for less then a white. Post
Jul '12 Iamjim42 v Yes, it should The minimum wage should reflect the minimum amount of compensation required for one to live at a basic level. $7.25 is nowhere near that level. I favor a living wage that fulfills one's living needs as a minimum wage. I believe that to be around $10/hr+. B1 r1 reply e30 endorsed Post
Jul '12 gammler v No, it shouldn't The minimum wage isn't designed to provide someone with a middle class income. It is designed for an entry level position, a temporary position, or a part time position. When it was originally passed in the FDR Administration it was designed to also prevent employers from working people for next to nothing thus depressing wages even further and reducing the liquidity of money. Every time it goes up it just increases the amount of paper in an employee's billfold. B2 e23 endorsed Post
Jul '12 Bobolinsky v No, it shouldn't The "minimum wage" is an artificial "wage floor". It's government interference in the free market. The effect is that the businesses that hire minimum wage labor can't afford to hire as many workers. Fewer jobs are the result. The unintended consequences of "wage controls" are always worse than the benefits they produce. ... The winner of minimum wage increases that never gets mentioned is the unions. Most union contracts have built-in automatic raises in the event of a raise in the minimum wage. Prevailing-wage laws in states that have them also have a built-in raise. ... The winners of a minimum wage increase are the unions and the losers are the poor and taxpaye... B1 e14 endorsed Post

Jul '12 Keyjo v Yes, it should In order to catch up with the cost of living, the minimum wage should be at least $15.00 per hour. Of course, the evil RICH capitalists will retaliate by raising the cost of living. So this turns out to be simply a case of a dog chasing it's own tail. There are those who say, "The minimum wage is for entry level." This is true, unfortunately there are far too many employers who pay ONLY minimum wage to seasoned, full time employees. And if the employee asks for a raise, a reason is found to terminate and another "happy" minimum wage worker is hired. With unemployment so high, there is no shortage of workers willing to be underpaid/overworked in order to just barely su... B1 r2 replies e8 endorsed Post
u Jul '12 IMAQT v No, it shouldn't Look, my friends; you can come up with as many reasons why people earning the minimum wage deserve a raise as you want, but one truth remains. The government should have no role in setting the wages that an employer will pay to an employee. That's a matter to be settled in the private sector, not by politicians trolling for votes. If you want to earn more than the minimum wage, or if you want a raise, you earn it. You do something to become more valuable to your employer and then negotiate for the wage you believe you deserve. And please, Let's stop with this crybaby nonsense about raising a family on the minimum wage! If you can't earn more than the minimum wage, you... e4 endorsed Post

Do you know how many bloody fights in the early 20th century that American workers had to go through to insure that future generations would have a minimum wage? If you are making minimum wage that means that a corporation would pay you less if they could. Who amongst the advocates of destroying the minimum wage laws could live on 3.50 an hour?
