Americans in their golden years are increasingly seeking to live abroad in places like Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Panama, mostly for financial reasons, reportsTIME.
Blame the effects of the economic meltdown in 2008 that wreaked havoc on 401k plans for Americans nearing retirement - only 14% of workers say they were "very confident" they'd have enough to retire on. They're also attracted by the less expensive lifestyle that has always existed in certain locales far away from American shores.
The cost of living is compared for some basic staples, showing that groceries in e.g. Seville, Spain, are 36% lower than in San Francisco; and that rent in Costa Rica is a whopping 57% less than in Philadelphia. Certain medical services are likewise cheaper than ticket prices found in the states.
But hidden costs abound as well, TIME warns, like the risk to personal safety that can come with political instability in some corners of the world.
"like the risk to personal safety that can come with political instability in some corners of the world."
And if the Class Warriors like President Obama have their way, the "political instability in some corners of the world" will not be as bad for the "rich" as it is here.
First the "rich" put their money into "Socialism Havens. Already done. Then if their "bodies" need refuge from the Class Warriors, their wealth will already be safe. All they have to do is move their "body" to a "Socialism Haven".
Costa Rica seems to be one of the most popular choices for Americans seeking a "Socialism Haven" for more than their money.
Let's see what the CIA World Factbook has to say about Costa Rica...
"In 1949, Costa Rica dissolved its armed forces. Although it still maintains a large agricultural sector, Costa Rica has expanded its economy to include strong technology and tourism industries. The standard of living is relatively high. Land ownership is widespread."
"Prior to the global economic crisis, Costa Rica enjoyed stable economic growth. The economy contracted 1.3% in 2009 but resumed growth at about 4% per year in 2010-11. "
"Foreign investors remain attracted by the country's political stability and relatively high education levels, as well as the incentives offered in the free-trade zones; and Costa Rica has attracted one of the highest levels of foreign direct investment per capita in Latin America."
Lmao let them retire! They just made space for new blood to get to work! But I still believe if you flee the U.S. You should be charged with treason and any money in offshore accounts should be rendered useless. ; )
In fact, just yesterday, I drained all my Swiss bank accounts and purchased my own island. Equipped it with 3000 solar panels and 100 wind turbines so I could power my all-terrain segway and my 500 square foot domicle that I had built in to the side of a hill. I also installed a desalination plant so I can water the crops on my organic farm, where I can grow hemp to make my own clothes and grapes to produce my own organic wine. Next month, I hope to install a space elevator and start my own orbitting space colony. So, after all that spending, I can't afford to pay my mortgage or my bills. Maybe, I will go down to the police station and get on welfare. Not a bad gig now, since Obama eleminated to work requirements. So, no, I am not rich.
I can barely afford to live here while I'm still in the work force. So we are considering moving abroad in our retirement. My wife and I have done some research and found we may be able maintain if not increase our standard of living. A damn shame, but do the math.
I'd love to be able to afford to move to one of the free world nations where the citizens ranked the happiest, most satisfied. The United States USED to be a free world nation, then along came Reagan and everything changed. Effing Plutocrats.
Well since our legislators have legally been conducting insider trading and engineered the market collapse with GW 17 TRILLION DOLLAR SECRET LOAN TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES IN 2009 ,AND NO BID CONTRACTS AFTER 9/11 TO CRONIES, AVERAGE FOLK LIKE ME LOST 6 FIGURES IN RETIREMENT PLANS. AND SINCE ONLY POOR PEOPLE PAY TAXES IN USA($1,000,000 AND UNDER BY GOP STARDARDS) IT MAKES SENSE.
"Medical Costs Are Very Cheap in Thailand - The cost of medications and doctor's visits in Thailand are very inexpensive. I recently had a chest x-ray, blood tests for diabetes, thyroid and sundry other ills, an EKG and two doctor's visits. The grand total? Less than $60 for everything and this at one of the top hospitals in Bangkok. Medication is inexpensive and much of it is available over the counter without a doctor's prescription, which cuts costs even more. Doctors too usually speak excellent English. The healthcare in most of Thailand too is as good, if not better, than in the west as many of the doctors here are western-educated and trained. As they get older, many retirees worry about burgeoning health costs - something that's not even a minor concern in Thailand."
The spirit of revolt grows stronger. if the liberties of the people continue to be raped by this puppet government we will all see change.im torn between the decision to flee with my family, or stay and watch the whole sh%@ house go up in flames.im poor so ill take the latter I guess.
I could never leave my country and will stay and go down with the ship, if need be. Too many have fought, and too much blood has been shed to keep this America and free. I love this country and all the people who gave their lives for the *greatest* country in the world, bar NONE...
