First get rid of Sarbane-Oxley, Dodd-Franks, Obamacare, and many of the Federal agencies like Education, HUD, etc. Second reduce government salaries to be in line with the average private sector salaries adjusted by location. Third, return to the rule of law instead of the current approach of the end justifies the means. Fourth, have government funding provided through the budget process without any continuing resolutions. The house proposes the budget then it goes to the senate. Why not create an alternative energy infrastructure and employ workers to install it. Wind on acres of public land in the Dakota's and solar on acres of public land in the sunbelt. Should have been done with the billions of stimulus money already spent instead of letting everyone sit home on the couch and collect. After the installation is complete the nation would have energy at a reduced price per KW/hr and industry overhead would go down allowing jobs to return to this country, where they should be! A little common sense for all.

First note that this question is old. The govt has done a reasonable job with stimulus, but now the economy is recovering and it's time to start the discussion about when to withdraw the stimulus and focus on debt reduction. That will require balanced budgets for many years. Surely if I know that, congress knows that too. And yet you see things like ordering the military to buy tanks it neither wants nor needs. So what we are going have to have, is a new congress with the ability and willingness to cut spending and raise taxes. In other words, no more business as usual in congress and voters choosing wisely. In the end, we will get what we deserve.

There are several things government can do: 1. Restructure taxes to penalize companies that outsource labor, reward companies that creat jobs in the US. 2. When unemployment is high, spend lot's of money of infrastructure development... when unemployment is low, reduce spending. 3. In every department from the IRS to DoD, hire more independent auditors to find and reduce fraud, waste and abuse. 4. I truly believe it will take a two edged approach but I think the regulatory burden is the biggest thing stopping small business from starting/growing. Taxes need to be kept in check certainly but more businesses to widen the tax base makes that easier.

Regulatory burden on business costs far more than taxes. Taxes are generally a percentage of revenue. In other words, a business must have some revenue to tax. Regulation, on the other hand, is often an up front expense placed upon a business prior to even earning a dime, with no regard for whether or not the business is going to make any money in the first place. It's past time for a New New Deal. The US economy is swamped in a major unemployment crisis, and the way to fix it is, no surprise, to employ people. This form of spending is more directly stimulative than any other one -- there's a multiplier effect as newly employed workers spend their salaries injects more money into the economy, meaning that each new job creates more new jobs.

Cut taxes: If taxes were cut people would have money to buy stuff. When people buy stuff we need to make stuff, and transport stuff, and stock, inventory, display, advertise, and sell stuff, and then we would need to hire more people to do this work and they too would have money to buy stuff. We can afford to lower taxes when we have more people contributing. Each time taxes go up, people bring home less money until for some they can no longer afford to go to work. Then the gov't pays them benefits and needs to raise the taxes on the rest. it's a downward spiral.
