The govt has done a reasonable job with stimulus, but now the economy is recovering and it's time to start the discussion about when to withdraw the stimulus and focus on debt reduction. That will require balanced budgets for many years. Surely if I know that, congress knows that too. And yet you see things like ordering the military to buy tanks it neither wants nor needs. So what we are going have to have, is a new congress with the ability and willingness to cut spending and raise taxes. In other words, no more business as usual in congress and voters choosing wisely. In the end, we will get what we deserve. Post

u Sep '12 AceLuby v More stimulus spending Fix our roads, repair our bridges, invest in more solar and wind power, update our sewers, invest in a national bio-diesel program... We need nation building right here, investing in ourselves and our children. These investments mean more people working which means more demand for private sector products and services. That demand creates private sector jobs which in turn creates even more demand. This is how you create jobs in this economy, and really the only macro economic tool left. The economic theory that we have used successfully for 70+ years and led us to the most prosperous time in human history was to deficit spend and lower taxes during the bad times and t... u Sep '12 CaryNickel v Reduce business regulations Regulatory burden on business costs far more than taxes. Taxes are generally a percentage of revenue. In other words, a business must have some revenue to tax. Regulation, on the other hand, is often an up front expense placed upon a business prior to even earning a dime, with no regard for whether or not the business is going to make any money in the first place. Or, it's added to the expense burden later, as new laws are passed, without regard to profit or loss. The cost of regulation has no regard for anything other than what politicians and government bureaucrats find necessary, thus those costs have FAR more effect on business than taxation. Add to that regulati... B1 e21 endorsed Post

u Sep '12 Roger v Hire more government workers It's past time for a New New Deal. The US economy is swamped in a major unemployment crisis, and the way to fix it is, no surprise, to employ people. This form of spending is more directly stimulative than any other one -- there's a multiplier effect as newly employed workers spend their salaries injects more money into the economy, meaning that each new job creates more new jobs. We all understand that common sense regulation is needed, but when a project is shut down and everyone laid off because someone's grandma saw a three legged lizzard there in 1935...well, hell, that just ain't common sense. When a bright young person, fresh out of a liberal university, walks out on a ranch and tells a rancher that his cattle herd must be cut in half because the crap they drop is ruining the soil (which he owns)...or their flatulance is ruining the atmosphere for the local wildlife...well, that just ain't common sense. Sep '12 rickv v Cut taxes Cut taxes: If taxes were cut people would have money to buy stuff. When people buy stuff we need to make stuff, and transport stuff, and stock, inventory, display, advertise, and sell stuff, and then we would need to hire more people to do this work and they too would have money to buy stuff. We can afford to lower taxes when we have more people contributing. Each time taxes go up, people bring home less money until for some they can no longer afford to go to work. Then the gov't pays them benefits and needs to raise the taxes on the rest. it's a downward spiral. B1 e5 endorsed Post
