George W. Bush isn't on the ballot this year but he could play a decisive role in the presidential race. That's what liberal writer Peter Beinart says of the 43rd president in The Daily Beast.
The GOP's image with voters is just too freighted with memories of Bush, no matter how far of the way Mitt Romney goes to avoid mentioning the former president. Deficits as far as the eye can see, a misguided war in Iraq, poor response to Hurricane Katrina - in Beinart's view all reasons many Americans hold low opinions of Bush's leadership.
"Without the Bush legacy, Romney would be leading this race. His problem is that except among staunch conservatives, Bush has so hurt the GOP's brand that Romney doesn't look like the fresh economic fix-it man that Republicans want to portray him as," Beinart writes. "Instead, it's all too easy for Democrats to paint him as George W. Bush the 3rd."
