Rick Santorum
engaged in a bit of class warfare yesterday, pitting those seated at the head of it against those sitting squarely in the back.
"We will never have the elite, smart people on our side," said the conservative Santorum to a crowd at this weekend's
Values Voter Summit in DC, "because they believe they should have the power to tell you what to do."
In a statement quickly
ridiculed by the very elite Santorum has in mind, the former GOP contender for the presidency proclaimed, "We will never have the media on our side in this country." He emphasized his point about the upper (cognitive) class by including institutions of higher learning as well: "Colleges and universities, they're not going to be on our side."
Ironically, some among the elite Santorum complains of may very well agree with his message. Psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics
argued earlier this year that while non-conservatives are indeed smarter, they're also more likely to make decisions at odds with human nature, such as the choice to abuse hard drugs or remain childless.
"Intelligence doesn't allow us to do better what we are designed by evolution to do," said Kanazawa.
