The Drudge Report's lead story for much of Thursday was a YouTube video of a low-income woman screaming her head off about her voting preferences, headlined, 'Obama Has My Vote, He Gave Me a Free Phone.' The story is hardly breaking news, but it supports a popular conservative belief that poor Americans vote for Obama because he gives them free stuff.
Since it appeared, various liberal sites have branded Drudge's headline placement of the video as racist.
Conservatives have jumped on the video for different reasons. For instance, Rush Limbaugh replayed the audio and explained in a monologue that "this is the model citizen in Barack Obama's vision."
Is Obama really giving away free phones? (Or Obamaphones, as the videotaped lady called them.) Essentially, yes.
There's a federal program that funds cell phones for low-income Americans. It's an FCC scheme called Lifeline, which "provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers. Lifeline helps ensure that eligible consumers have the opportunities and security that phone service brings, including being able to connect to jobs, family, and emergency services." To qualify, you need to have an income below 135% of the poverty line and be enrolled in Medicaid or various welfare programs.
So the program does exist, but it wasn't Obama's initiative. It was started "long before Obama took office" – in fact, under Reagan – though it's grown under Obama's presidency, as Glenn Beck's site The Blazepoints out.
This is President Foodstamp's base right here. This woman (if you can call her that) is the reason I could never in a million years support President Food Stamp. It is time we come together as Americans and evict President Foodstamp from God's House and elect someone who believes in America.
Quantummist, I watched all four of those videos and I have two questions: 1) How many actually knowledgeable people do you supposed these video makers interviewed before they felt like they had enough morons to make the point they were pre-determined to make? 2) Couldn't someone with a liberal agenda do the same thing to make it seem like the average conservative voter was just as idiotic?
@Denizen_Kate ... From looking over the crowds, talking to lot's of folks My on view is the cleaning crew don't have a lot of work on their hands.... Take a Look at the Crowds... Walk into them with a camera and mic... You say it's editing, I say its Pandemic
Nope you sure don't. I have family that have these handout cell phones. A husband and wife. Who are suppose to be separated, but are not. This way they get 600 in food stamps. Both have the phone, 250 free minuets a month. HUD. Electric bill help. You name it. They know the ropes.
@Just_Lisa On the other hand, my mother, who is crippled with arthritis, has worked all her life, and raising my niece and nephew, got the free phone but gets $600 a month income, no food stamps, medicaid, child support, anything. And believe me, she's tried. It wouldn't matter who was president...those that know how to work the system will work it, regardless.
hahaha, this lady is a trip. There are parasite voters who love republicans too. i would like to think people like this are a few and far between. but it kills me that our tax dollars pay out benefits to trash like this.
No, Obama is not giving out cell phones. During the bush administration, some states started this program. It is a state program and has nothing to do with Obama. If it had anything to do with a President, then blame bush.
Let me see if I understand. Not listening to poor minorities and not giving them the opportunity to air their views in the media, that's racist. UNLESS, their comments are embarrassing to the Left, in which case listening to poor minorities and giving them the opportunity to air their views in the media, that's racist.
OK, I think I've got it now. Basically, anyone who opposes the liberal elite's master plan for a totalitarian academocracy is racist no matter what they do or say, or don't do or say.
Well, let's take a look at this shall we? A program started by Reagan,(a white man). Nothing is said against it by conservatives. Continued by Bush 1 (a white man). Nothing is said against it by conservatives. Continued by Clinton (a white man). Nothing is said against it by conservatives. Continued by Bush 2 (a white man). Nothing said against it by conservatives. Continued by Obama (a black man). Conservatives loose their minds, claiming it is a plot to take over America. Gee, I wonder why liberals would ever think that it's due to racism?
Well I wonder why you don't see very many interviews with minorities who support Obama who are not the same demographic as this woman?...Could it be that the person making this vid just wanted to somehow use this one woman as some kind of example of ALL black people who support Obama---That's why it RACIST!
When I get a new phone, I generally turn in my old one. Sprint regularly refurbishes and donates them to various charities. Been going on a lot longer than Obama's term. Like the article mentioned, it started with Reagan. Of course it was okay when he did it, when the two Bushes did it. But NOW, "oh hell no!" Suddenly it's another unacceptable handout designed to help poor people (135% below poverty line) reach emergency services and go job hunting. More of that good ol'(Republican) boy, "Do as I say, not as I do!"
Hmmm...I guess the free phone recipient didn't read that part either. Who started it is irrelevant to the voter who believes Obama is giving them free stuff. That's the whole point, not who or when it became reality.
It started with Obama, hence the name Obama phone. Also, many here were in the streets saying we're getting 'free'" money. When the reporter asked where is it coming from? The person said Obama... the reporter asked , "where is Obama getting it from?" She said, he has a lot of money and he's giving it to us, I don't know where he gets it." Some mentality, huh? Gimme, Gimme..he got it from the Government, and WE are the government!!!
She probably cant spell J O B, thanks to the teachers union, between the two it is a solid dem voting base. Purposefully uneducated people who dont know any better voting for the people who put them in that position because they dont know how to get thier own check for themselves. I think breaking the back of the N.E.A. and bringing in vouchers is job one as far as turning this ship around. It was generations getting here, we need to start educating our kids again and quit indoctrinating.
@Sonny LOL...and you don't stereotype by calling all Republicans rich, uncaring money grubbers?! Let me tell you something, I grew up poor. I didn't even have a phone as a child, and did without many things! How dare you tell me about stereotypes! If I would have followed the path of my poverty, rather than look for a way out of it, and choosing a man who had money, and going back to school furthering my education, despite having three young boys, not to mention spending twenty years of my life helping people by working in social services and the psychiatric field, getting my self injured badly by people who were mentally ill and to this day suffer from having my ribs fractured...Never once applying for any assistance, never even filing workman's comp., having enough pride in myself that I chose to NEVER depend on government hand-outs maybe then you could judge me...but you can't ! We become "stereotypes", and I chose not to be a government liability, it's called having pride in who you are and not expecting the government to give you hand-outs from cradle to grave! I broke the "stereotype", because everything in my life pointed me straight to living off government entitlements. It's about choices, it's about independence from the government, and if I'm stereotyping because I believe in independence and freedom, instead of leeching from the system....then I guess I'm one of those rich, uncaring, cold hearted Republicans! You are the one doing the stereotyping, not me.
