On Friday Israel shot down a mysterious drone that appeared over the Negev region from the Mediterranean.
Where it came from is unknown, but many are speculating that Iran launched the drone from Lebanon, a few hundred miles from Israel. Does Iran have that capability? It's possible.
Iran claims its new drone, the Shahed-129 UAV, "has a range of 1,250 miles, significantly more than the distance from Tehran to Tel Aviv," according to Slate's John Vilasenor – though he notes that Iran's claims of military prowess should be met with skepticism. If the drone is Iranian, it could be the first of many to appear over Israel.
The incident raises other major questions, for instance, how did the aircraft get so far into Israeli airspace before it was detected?
Israel has released a video showing its fighter jet firing a missile that strikes down the drone, which was fairly small, and may have been sent to surveil Israel's Dimona nuclear plant. Little else is known.
