A Wisconsin state rep is on the receiving end of criticism today for comments made 10 months ago, when he suggested that some women will falsely accuse a man of rape.
Republican Roger Rivard
told the
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in December of last year that his father's advice once warned him that "some girls rape easy," an apparent plea to be on the lookout for women who will falsely claim rape after initially consenting to sex. "Consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry," Rivard informed the paper.
And while statistically speaking that's sometimes true - Slate reported in 2009 that around 1 in 10 rape claims are likely false - it was the Rep. Rivard's choice of words that is placing him in hot water with political rivals and women's rights groups alike.
Why is this news nearly a year later? Chalk it up to Rivard's tight race for re-election against Democratic rival Democrat Stephen Smith, who called the comments offensive. "I'm offended to think that my sister or my daughters would be thought of in that manner," said Smith. "I feel Roger is out of touch with the majority of voters and his views are extreme."
Likewise upset with Rivard are local women's rights groups. "Unfortunately, comments like these are all too common," said Pennie Meyers of the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
