You'd think that women who are both feminist and Mormon could go either way in this election - stuck with two equally attractive options like the proverbial
. But word on the street is that the sub-population of Americans known as Mormon Feminists are opting for President Obama over his LDS rival.
Erika Eichelberger at
Mother Jones informs us that according to Mormons who'd describe themselves as feminist, candidate Romney's ideas on what's expected of women are evidence of a "paternalistic" point of view they don't share. This was on display in the last presidential debate's question concerning equal pay, they say.
"If you're going to have women in the workforce, you need to be flexible," stated Romney to debate moderator Candy Crowley. "My chief of staff, for instance, had two kids that were in school." Those words, says Aimee Hickman, co-editor of Mormon feminist publication
Exponent II, signaled Romney's conception of women "ultimately as mothers."
"The emphasis on women being seen as leaders or breadwinners is still missing from our rhetoric," said Hickman.
But it goes beyond merely anecdotes. According to a survey by
Exponent II, Obama is favored over Romney by a factor of more than 2 to 1.
