Sadly the people did not understand just how stupid that remark was. There were so many easy ways to refute the statement and I did not hear a decent one. I will give a few examples. Bell and the Telephone. Edison and many, including the Electric Light. Carnegie and the Bessemer steel process. Henry Ford and the assembly line. The easiest refutation to understand is that the Federal Government only has money it gets from the people. So it is never really the one that builds anything. Everything the Fed 'invests' in is paid for by the taxes it collects from the people.

The last real leader we had was President Ronald Reagan after whom the Presidency started its nosedive which has continued to this day. We not only did build that, but WE also built all of those other things he claimed we didn't build, but that the gov't built, like the roads, and bridges, and the rest of the infastructure. All the gov't did was took our money and paid it out to contractors to do it for them. Who were those contractors? Private companies who bid on the jobs. Who worked for those private companies who did the actual building of those things? We did. He can say all he wants to that we didn't build that... but if we didn't build it, who does he imagine, did?

@Thunderchicken Besides retired people, SSI is paid to support children and disabled adults, as are many of the other social welfare programs. Shall we make 8-year-olds "take responsibility and care for their lives"? Maybe we should convince people that were turned into quadriplegics by drunk drivers that they are not victims? Or maybe we should tell disabled veterans that government has no responsibility to care for them?

Romney's 47% statement is just a TRUE statement! I know someone will not like my "statement", but, at least 47% of this nation are on some form of (unearned) government assistance (welfare, food stamps, SSI, Gov. housing, medicare, excessive student loans......etc). SDI, Social security......etc are "earned" and therefore does NOT qualify as "government assistance". All the rest doesn't matter.
