Republican Congressman Todd Akin has lost his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri, CNN reports.
The result isn't all that surprising. McCaskill was leading Akin by four points prior to Election Day, according to a November 4 poll by Public Policy Polling.
Akin's race stirred controversy due to his comments on rape and pregnancy during an August 19 interview with local St. Louis, MO, television station KTVI-TV. The question asked Akin if he'd support abortion in the case of pregnancy from rape. He replied:
"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."
The comment was widely criticized, costing the Akin campaign support from many powerful donors on the right and galvanizing many McCaskill supporters on the left. He suffered a massive loss in the polls. Akins, however, wasn't without support from the pro-life movement, and made significant gains towards the end of the election.
Please,..silly question, the good people of Missouri are not ignorant, the man repeatedly shot himself in the foot. Akin did his party a gross disservice by failing to withdraw. The conservative wing of the GOP who jumped in to support Akin didn't do themselves or the party much good
@Denizen_Kate Sheesh! There are others of us that are kinda a catch too ya know! ;) Teasin. Darsb, if you ever get laid over in Utah again look me up brother. I'll show you it's not all Sunday school and multiple wives here.
No surprise at all. All three of the men who proved themselves completely clueless about women's issues, not to mention women's bodies, were defeated (Mourdock, Akin, and Walsh). That makes me smile. :)
I was floored by some of the right wing comments concerning rape in the last year. Do they actually believe what they say? I thought you had to be educated to hold office? Can we start giving them a test before letting them hold a seat?
Not surprised, but it could have gone either way. I'm so glad that we Americans have a magic hormone to protect us against The Crazy. Sanity shut that whole thing down. Take your atomic comb-over and disappear, Akin.
I do not know how in the world Todd Akin even going to go out in public. Pure Ignorance! He misrepresented any party in America. Oh wait, 4th Party Bone Heads Party and he gets an early nomination for their President.
