Jun 3 falco_alba v Popular Vote Electoral College invalidates the votes of thousands of people. I personally chose to go back to Ohio to vote because my vote didn't make a whit of difference in Indiana (at the time I was going to school in Indiana). It is conceivable that the President could be elected to office despite not getting over 50% of the popular vote. That is unacceptable. Post
Jun 3 Keyjo v Popular Vote In 2000, Gore won the popular vote, Bush the Electoral College and the Supreme Court. Think how much better off the United States would be if we used popular vote in 2000! There likely would have been no Iraq war, no tax cuts for the wealthy, and a maintenance of the budget surplus Clinton left us instead of a deficit! Popular vote; hell YES! B1 r1 reply Post
Jun 2 ram84 v Popular Vote In this past election i saw one the news states being given to Obama after only 37% of votes were counted .....wtf? Popular votes makes most sense. Post

May '13 Aftermath v Popular Vote Anytime in an election, when the person that gets the most votes is not the winner, then there is cheating going on and I don't care which side you are for. The man or woman with the most votes should be the winner. Every time. r2 replies Post
u May '13 fraps We have a system in place that chooses the individuals that actually vote for the president and vice president. The president is chosen when a majority of those individuals pick him. The problem we have with the system in place is that many of those who choose the members of the Electoral College have no skin in the game. Voting should be limited to avoid some groups of people. One example is people under the age of 50 who do not pay taxes should not have the right to vote. That single restriction would start to clean things up immediately. B1 @fraps Post

Jun 3 Keyjo But if the majority of the nation's population leans Liberal, shouldn't the leader reflect that? @Keyjo Post
Jun 3 RedFloppyShoes @Keyjo no, as the large cities are compressed locations and do not represent the views of the other 50% of the USA population and 75% of the land mass of the USA. @RedFloppyShoes Post

May '13 PJS1973 v Popular Vote The electoral college was created to overcome a technological handicap. We have the capability for a popular vote and should do one. Post
May '13 JesusLivesInMe v The Electoral College The process for presidency was designed in such a way that allows for each area to have a say without the bigger cities, or bigger states having the win automatically. Our Founding Fathers didn't want a democracy (majority rules) because they had enough wisdom to understand that such way of thinking leads to dictatorship and ultimately enslavement. So they formed this Nation on a "Constitutional Republic" which says that each individual has a say and not automatically the 'majority. And that's why they formed the voting process the way they did. Post

Nov '12 Speedieg v Popular Vote It should be by popular vote, everyone's vote would count. It would also force candidates to address the whole country and not just focus on a few states to get to enough electoral votes. r3 replies e54 endorsed Post
Nov '12 Lpguy v The Electoral College This is the better method of electing President of our republic. The founders wanted to limit democracy as much as possible because the demand of the majority can become arbitrary or oppressive. "the system was designed to select the most qualified individual to head the executive branch of government, rather than to select a candidate who represented some citizens more than others." (Holcombe, 2000) The electoral college also attempts to give the less populous states and rural areas a more equal footing in choosing their president. I personally do not like either of these choices, i think a better system abounds if we seek it out. Randall G. Holcombe, "Origins of the... B1 r1 reply e33 endorsed Post
Nov '12 ProudLiberal v Popular Vote A large group of people representing states do not represent the multitude of views within states. It's unfair how we prefer to think that a group of people, possibly politicians, represent the will of the people. B2 e29 endorsed Post
Nov '12 GetAwake v Popular Vote There was once a legitimate need for the Electoral College...just like there was once a need for the Pony Express. While they probably couldn't get an accurate-tally of the popular vote together in the time that the media fabricates one for election night-programming, they could surely have every vote counted by the weekend...the following Tuesday at the latest. The EC doesn't get together until the third week in December, anyway. The only group that would suffer would be the Mainstream-Media outlets, so THERE'S an added bonus right off of the bat... Nov '12 Buzzfriendly v The Electoral College It's a matter of fairness and the genius of our founding fathers. It prevents New York and LA from electing the president every four years. A lot of people think this isn't fair, why should rural populations get a larger say than urban populations? But consider this, more than half of the US population lives in major cities. If we were to go to a popular vote system where whoever got the most votes won the election outright, why would any presidential candidate care about what happens in rural states? You could win an election just by advocating policies that matter for people that live in cities. Ultimately even if there was a reason to go away from the electoral col... r1 reply e14 endorsed Post
u Nov '12 USCITIZEN v Popular Vote It is "We the People" who ordain and establish the Constitution for the United States of America. Nov '12 JaneDoh v Popular Vote I just don't see how as a democratic country doesn't go by majority rule. What happens if only 1000000 people from California vote and they still receive 55 electoral votes. That's crap. B1 r2 replies e3 endorsed Post

Nov '12 FaFoxy v The Electoral College Firstly, despite a widespread misconception, there is NO federal "RIGHT TO VOTE". The right to vote is strictly up to the states to provide if they wish to do so. Now if you disbelieve me, simply look at the early history of our country, and see how the electors were chosen in the various states in the first 10 (40 years) POTUS elections. Now, BEFORE you say: "Well, the subsequent amendments changed all that !" NO, THEY DIDN'T ! They simply said on what basis a state COULD NOT deny a person the right to vote IF, AND ONLY IF, a state CHOSE TO GRANT a general "right to vote". Study some U.S. Constitutional Law ! (I have done so in college). Secondly, IF the so-called "E... B2 e1 endorsed Post
u Nov '12 Litdes v The Electoral College The electoral college, while imperfect ensure that no entire state is marginalized. Keep in mind the nation's most populous city, New York, has a greater population that all but 12 states. Getting rid of the electoral college would effectively concentrate the majority of power in a very few populous states, leaving much of the rest of the country without much in the way of influence.
