Coulter Invited - Then Uninvited - to Speak at University

Did campus Republicans bow to social pressure, or simply see the "error" of their ways?

Ann Coulter is right now scratching her head somewhere thinking, "When did these college Republican types become so faint of heart?"

The Huffington Post reports that the conservative pundit was invited, and then uninvited by New York's Fordham University's campus Republican club to speak after Fordham President Joseph McShane expressed dismay at her selection. "To say that I am disappointed with the judgment of the College Republicans would be a tremendous understatement," said McShane in an email. "There are many people who can speak to the conservative point of view with integrity and conviction, but Ms. Coulter is not among them."

What is he getting at? Likely Coulter's recent reference to the President as a "retard" among other things. Nonetheless, he said he would not ban her appearance, hoping instead to convince Fordham's chapter of the CRs to cancel her speech on their own.

It's an application of social pressure that appears to have worked. Following McShane's disapproval, the CRs rescinded her invitation and asked the campus to "forgive" their "error."

That is not even for the Father McShane to decide. To call it needlessly provocative, suggests that the attention she gets would be there without her fiery spirit. I believe the father has good intentions, but at some point, college students will need to grow up. Coddling them will not help.

There was a time when, as a slightly left-leaning independent, I could have intelligent and thoughtful conversations on social and political issues with conservatives friends, without name-calling and without the "my way or the highway" attitudes. Fordham President Joseph McShane's pressure on a campus group to have Coulter uninvited is what is disturbing. It's always "freedom of speech" for every topic or speaker under the sun as long as they are liberal but, to hear from anyone with an opposing view is increasingly shut down or marginalized by political correctness.

if the universities can't handle having their students see all points of view, it is the students loss. sometimes it has more to do with the speaker and te university at odds with the deal they struck...
