Until today, rumor had John Kerry as the favorite to replace Hillary Clinton as Sec. of State. But Kerry's now being touted as potential replacement for Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense, according to the Washington Post.
The Sec. of Defense role would draw on Kerry's military career as a navy officer who served multiple tours in Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts. However, Kerry's subsequent anti-war activism might make his appointment as Pentagon chief perhaps "slightly awkward," as The Atlantic Wire's Dashiell Bennett notes.
Kerry's chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee led many a pundit to view him as a shoe-in for the Sec. of State seat. But apparently Obama has reserved that role for UN Ambassador Susan Rice - even though she's now a controversial figure among Republicans for her misleading statements after the Benghazi attack.
