Ireland's abortion law is under scrutiny after a pregnant woman died of blood poisoning when a termination could have saved her life, according to the Guardian.
Savita Halappanavar was four months pregnant when she went to a Galway hospital with back pain. Doctors realized she was having a miscarriage and decided to let it run its course, after which she spent the day "in agony," her husband told the Guardian.
She asked for a termination, but was refused by doctors who said that they couldn't abort the baby as long as it still had a heartbeat. Halappanavar died from E. coli and septicemia a week after checking in.
Abortion is illegal in Ireland with one exception: when the mother's life is in danger. So it wasn't Irish law that prevented Halappanavar from having an abortion, but rather the doctors treating her.
The story has been taken up by pro-choice activists stateside, who claim similar tragedies are already happening here. "Thanks to the rapid expansion of Catholic hospital chains, in entire regions of the United States the denial of life-saving abortion services is already happening," arguesDaily Kos blogger Jon Perr.
@Calfkiller I thought that too. That's why I also thought they were part of the socialized medical system there. Im thinking she didn't have a choice in location. I'm wondering why they didn't see the infection. Ahh more Irecare...
@Penn1699 exactly. What really peeves me is that the left is in total denial mode of anything that points to the negative effects of gov't mandated healthcare. They would rather entertain the delusion that everyone is going to be happy and live till they are a hundred. Of course people will still die young, but that will only happen to other people not them. If only the mean stinking rich republicans would see the error of their ways.
The Irish law didn't kill her, she was killed by unbelievably incompetent medical care. A simple WBC count combined with her symptoms would have revealed a raging infection. If the MD's withheld an abortion due to religious convictions they're murderers; they caused her death
@AceLuby She was murdered by incompetent physicians acting in violation of Irish law on what they perceived as G-ds will, typical Catholic thinking. They are murderers plain and simple. When a woman, 17 weeks pg presents, fully dilated, leaking amniotic fluid there is NO way a fetus can survive. She will miscarry 100% of the time. So they did nothing for 3 DAYS waiting for fetal death before proceeding with a D&C by then the mother had septicemia and died of the overwhelming blood infection. Irish law permits abortion to save the mother, the incompetent religious MD zealots are killers and should be tried as such
@AceLuby If they didn't perceive the woman's life to be endager then they have no business practicing medicine. She was given blood test WBC which revealed a raging infection. If you understand anything about medicine you would know that when you have a patient with the symptoms as described in numberous articles describing the case: Irish, UK (where Irish go for abortionss) and US reports. Symptom 1 17 weeks PG Dialated and leaking amniotic fluid = guarantied result 100% of the time fetal death miscarriage. Symptom 2 17 Week PG females in severe pain, temperation 102 degress WBC Count extreamly elevated. Conclusion in conjunction with system #1 Mother is in big trouble. Dx blood infection due to dying fetus in womb. Only way to save mother's life Immediate IV Antibiotics + DC The law does not require that there be a heartbeat only that the mothers life be in danger STICK WITH FACTS
@AceLuby I believe this may be an accurate description of went on read then tell me how you'd have felt if you were your wife in this situation. Baby sure to die, Mom going to die if nothing is done = Catholic church dogma let them both die.
No the bill being brought in Ohio would not give an exception for anything! If the zygoat or fetus has a heartbeat which at times can be seen on a ultrasound in as little as 3 weeks it will be against the law to terminate.
@classychazy isn't that what the law says? unless there is a significant threat to the mother? The law has nothing to do with what happened. It was the Doctors who happened to be operating in a socialized healthcare system who didn't perform the necessary procedure. Politix Mary and the left are in for a shock if they think they are going to force the Catholics to start performing abortions. Who cares if Ohio passes the law or not. Anyone that doesn't like it has the option of going out of state.
This is what happens when you mingle religion and medicine you get egotistical people who make a decision based on what they believe to be right! Instead of listening to a woman who knows her body better then anyone!
I am sorry for this young woman's death and believe her doctors failed her. As I have said before there are circumstances where there are no other solutions. But to use abortion as a form of birth control is premeditated murder. I differ with most of my political allegiances on this issue as most Libertarians see it as a choice. I believe the right to life is paramount and only extraordinary circumstances such as the mothers life being at stake for instance could justify the taking of a life.
@classychazy No I don't. I see it as way of negating one's responsibility by homicide if used as birth control. To me it is no different than killing a three old because you don't want it. Murder is murder.
@truthsayer There is where in my opinion you are wrong. Men can and do walk away ALOT! Leaving the woman to live impoverished and alone, thus affecting her life in a immeasurable way and in someways killing her. Its a form of death worse then dying its self!
@classychazy This is where I differ. I would legislate against abortion but would like to see public acceptance and avocation for the morning after pill as an alternative. I am not religious and I'm pro birth control. But I think aborting a child as nothing more than an extension of birth control is murder. You speak to dead beat fathers. The solution there is to hold them responsible. Seriously responsible. But I do not support abortion for other than rape, incest, mother's life. Again, I would legislate against it but I would and do advocate against it. The morning after pill is the correct route. No formation, no heartbeat/pulse, nothing more than a microscopic speck of tissue is dislodged. Now I know that's not acceptable to the bible thumpers or the left wing fem nazis. But it's what I believe.
And what decision does the child get to make with it's body? What makes it's life less valuable. I am all for government, clergy, neighbors and institutions staying out of our life's. And I mean making no moral or personnel lifestyle decisions in our life's at all. But the killing of a child should not treated as if a tumor is being removed. What is being removed from a woman's body in an abortion is not the woman's body but another individuals life and it has every right to live. There are circumstances such as is this case when abortion is the only alternative but never as birth control.
What if the other person who contributed DNA wants the child. Is it not also part of them and they should have the right to claim it? If a woman doesn't want the pregnancy she needs to guard against, now that is her choice to choose the best birth control method, abortion should never be considered a birth control option.
@truthsayer, This great nation of ours lets us make most of our own desicions, that's what. If I wanted the government make desicions on our bodies I would move to China. I do not consider a human being until delivered. If women would not have a choice the possibility of aborting the mass would not have been created. Since the possibility is there then there has to be a reason for it to be used, maybe an unfit or immature future mother as an example. There are no laws against the male bodies because the world has been ran by the male gender. If it was up to me every deadbeat parent would have to be sterilized when they do not take care of the first offspring they produce. How about implementing that as a law? How would males would feel about that?
@citizen7 If the second party contributor of the DNA wants the child after being in the woman's oven then let them get an oven of themselves to transfer that zygote. Since that is not a possibility yet the mother's right's supersedes the other donor. Possession is nine-tenths of the law is an expression meaning that ownership is easier to maintain if one has possession of something, and much more difficult to enforce if one does not.
@CAUCASIAN So basically you are saying a fetus ( baby to me) is property of the woman? If we use that old law then children until they become adults are considered chattel and can be beaten, abused, mistreated at will because they are nothing more than property. However, I do agree with sterilization of deadbeat parents male and female. I also think if a female has more than 2 abortions, unless her life bein danger, should be sterilized because apparently she isn't capable of making good decisions.
While I am against the abortion as a form of birth control (which is what planned parenthood pushes), I of course understand abortion is a needed procedure that can be used as needed for a variety of purposes, including saving the mother's life, rape pregnancies, and of course, for the personal reasons of the mother. Abortion access should never be denied under any circumstances. She should have got the abortion so she could have lived.
Even if you take religion out of it it is still murder to kill the baby. How can you force a doctor to commit murder if they don't want too? That is something they would have to live with for the rest of their lives.
Well, these doctors ended up murdering TWO people because of refusing to take out the baby that had NO chance of surviving. There is no way this baby could have been saved, and by letting the mother suffer and get an infection from the dying baby, they murdered her, too. I hope they have nightmares about her every night! They essentially stamped out her life, any future children she could have had, and took her from her husband and family...
Thats a lie... Wimminz dont die from not having abortions. It was clearly that thing on her lip turned malignant. Must of been. Cause wimminz bodies would just shut that whole process down anyway.
Why am I having to explain this... Arent there some good honest and helpful senators out there who could explain this better than I?... Oh... Really? All of them?... You sure? Wow.. Ok, I guess it IS my job to say it, because it seems our candidates campaigns got "legitimately raped" last week. Wonder if it goes unreported like so many rapes do... Or do they just not want to talk about it?
Ok... Something tells me I am not making this response Psychotic enough, like my other joke posts. So... Hrm...So many to chose from.
"2 down, Only 1.2 billion to go."? Hrm... How about "The last thing in the world the UK can afford to lose is a dentist"? Maybe "It's not how you die that matters. It's how many you take with you"?..... Cmon.... nothin? Man tough crowd.
