Is the Benghazi attack one of the worst crises in America's history? The closed-door hearing on Thursday certainly made it sound that way. Republican Congressmen alleged a coverup worse than Watergate, while Dems called the GOP response 'McCarthyism.'
The House Foreign Affairs hearing on "Benghazi and Beyond" generated more heat than light, especially after Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) accused Obama of deliberate lies. The president "has intentionally misinformed, read that LIED, to the American people," said Rohrabacher.
He then claimed that the alleged coverup is worse than Watergate: "This is not simply a cover up of a third-rate burglary. We have four of our personnel dead, and it is not a McCarthy-era tactic to demand accountability."
Democrats responded in kind, with Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) remarking sarcastically, "let's just hang the guilty parties." He then launched into a screed indicting Republicans for their role in the tragedy:
"The stench of hypocrisy that hangs over this city today emanates from this room," said Ackerman, accusing Republicans in the room of reducing funding for embassy security. "Ask not who the guilty party is, it's you!"
Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-VA) also got in on the action, accusing the GOP of "McCarthyism" and a smear campaign against Susan Rice.
The security experts at the meeting, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Acting CIA Director Mike Morell, has little to add: they did not know who finalized Susan Rice's talking points blaming the movie for the attack, and they couldn't explain why the role of militants was minimized, according toFox News.
@CanisCanemEdit - the coverup is BC its a CIA op. the white house can't come out and say the CIA was using the consulate as a base to complete an op, and their cover was blown and they were attacked. If they were holding terrorists there then there going to come for them. That would piss alot of countries off knowing that we have CIA agents running around the world doing whatever they please.
Don't forget when Bush lied about wmd's in Iraq. We've lost 4,482 soldiers due to that lie. But I guess we will just look past that BC Bush said war is good and so did fox news, so you don't care about those 4000 plus lives. But when 4 people die due to the CIA you blame the dems. just look at how hypocritical you are. All you care about is the party battle. You don't care about lives or you would call for Bush to be charged for lying to Congress.
@Poboy51 I have a question for everyone demanding answers. What happens when you get your answers? Why do you even deserve them? Are you part of the military actions going on? Do you NEED to know these things? If you think you do, then I'm pretty sure I need to know the nuclear codes and locations. I mean hell, we're Americans, we deserve to know, right?!
@Poboy51 yea im in Obama's cult you're right. Seeing as I don't support him, and I didn't vote for him. You are an assumer and also a repeater. You have no cognitive skills to even process information. You hear what people say and repeat. I was explaining how hypocritical her response is. I completely agree that this was wrong, but when you try to use crisis' as a political gain it's a sad thing. And every life is priceless but were still losing lives in Iraq to buddy. Why aren't you complaining about those lies. Bush sent them over there to do his personal duties. Not to defend America from WMD's. And im a libertarian. Don't ever call me a Obama supporter. BC that would be false.
"Will the Benghazi hearings reveal what really happened?"
...... Don't know. I will say that no matter what comes to light, McCain and Graham have not only done the process and our country a major disservice with their accusations, they have shown their extreme hypocrisy. Where was their anger and righteous indignation when Condoleezza Rice was up for confirmation as Sec/State. Not long before she had claimed as National Security adviser that we needed to be prepared for mushroom clouds created by Iraq. Thousands died because of her and Bush's administration's insistence that an American military response be based on intel no one could get on the same page over. Graham and McCain are using a tragedy to further a political objective - get the president. What a couple of losers.
@Canoochee - No. this needs to be investigated and the cards fall where they may. But to stir up the issue preemptively like they have is both hypocritical and even worse using a tragedy to further their political aims.
We know what really happened. Some ignorant Muslim terrorist planed an attack on our Embassy in Benghazi. Our troops called for help, but they was ignored. Three times they called, but no one came. The CIA had men on the ground and drones in the air and radioed to be allowed to help the troops. Stand Down was the order they received. Then to add insult to injury, Obama began hollering its the video. Yea, right liar. I cannot believe you have not seen this since it is all over the news 3 weeks ago when it happened. Oh it was not on the US news, they were to busy trying to cover Obama's screw ups so he could be re-elected.
@Polusalo - A free society is a messy society. But this is not about Benghazi, it's about Obama. He may have screwed up, but I imagine that all the preemptive accusations and grandstanding from the Right will not serve them well either. I used to have some respect for McCain. Never had much for Graham.
@MRMacrum Yeah, it's insane. I don't think people actually understand what they're saying when they're typing. They're pretty much saying "Our President of the United States gave the order to kill our own men."
These are the same people who will five minutes later say "I'm a patriot!".
I'd be pleased if people started becoming accountable for their statements. Everytime someone says something like that, bang, sued for defamation of character. Calling someone a murderer does a little damage to your image.
@Polusalo Thats just how the country sees it. It is still on all the news. Not ABC, NBC, CBS, because they are in bed with that Kenyan guy that is operating in the White House and refuse to report his misdeeds so as not to have him charged with treason.
The sad thing is the people foolishly reelected the man who mangled the handling of Benghazi. I'm surprised with this much incompetence that more embassies haven't been hit. Americans are in a bad way right now. Hopefully in 2014, some of us open our eyes and put more real Americans in office.
@kirbstomp1 That argument won't fly....if you can't afford to be there, then do like the British and others did...get out. But, the real issue is where you use the funds you have. This shows just how incompentent Barack Husssein Obama is at leadership...we stand leaderless and embarassed before the world.
@seedtick - im just showing hypocrisy. I agree we don't need all those embassies.and consulates. As for your Obama statement, the majority of the world wanted Obama to win for America? Im not sure were you got your facts on that, I think assumption?
@seedtick bull. what happened at the embassy has absolutely nothing to do with the president... not only that, but if you really look at it, it's exactly what the cia wanted to happen there. they have their reasons, and those reasons are none of your business.
@dances-weebles hey buddy everything they do is my business,i pay their salary, they are part of MY country,Those were My countrymen that died,I want to know if everything that could be done to save them was,i don,t need top secret details, but i need to know if they were mere sacrifices to the Muslim Brotherhood or what
Nothing will satisfy the Republicans. This is not about honoring four brave men dying on foreign soil doing what they believed in.....it IS all about obstructing and crippling an administration they despise. These myopic hypocrites would rather bring down the country than let another party lead.
The GOP tried to make this a political football during the election, but it didn't get the traction they wanted. In the aftermath of their losses they seem intent on flogging this dead horse another few miles.
I think they're going to have to find a way to put this to bed in some face-saving way. The information available indicates the attack was unexpected and what assets we had in the vicinity were utilized as effectively as could be expected - and there just wasn't a way to get additional forces on scene quickly. There's no non-tinfoil hat evidence of a cover-up, and the fact is the controlling House Republicans did cut funding for embassy and consulate security. And now, as this news story indicates, Democrats have grown a spine.
Against the backdrop of the fiscal cliff negotiations Benghazi isn't as immediately relevant to most people, whereas January 1 tax hikes certainly are. Public tantrums from Senators McCain and Graham, the same pair who defended Condoleeza Rice over her WMD boondoggle, are certainly not helping define this as a major issue. Instead, they make it appear to be sour grapes posturing from the party of Old White Guys.
Fortunately for the administration the committee will have to discuss facts with actual sources unlike Fox, Limbaugh, and a good number of the posters here who will listen to some right wing but job with a blog that is discredited daily because it is what they want to here.
Come on people.....they were in a very unsecured place and it had been that way for years. If there was a problem with security, then it should have been addressed a long time ago. What is sad to me, is how our politicians use this terrible situation to try to gain political strength. Its not at all about what happened or who got killed its all about one party trying to blame another...there is the disgrace...
I would not hang people. But if someone needs to be held accountable for the death of 4 Americans. How do we allow this to just sit and linger? Because we all just want to get along with terrorists and Obama had an election to run and he was kind of tied up with that at the time. Someone is going to start leaking more information and someone is going down. Hopefully the right people.
Did we find out yet whose "Brilliant Idea" it was to blame it on a YouTube video and create commercials of apologies on MiddleEastern tv's at the taxpayers cost? Or are we pretending that this administration never said a word about a Video? What a disaster and liberals act like its no big deal. Has Obama called the former marines parents like Hilary did and lied or was he to busy calling Sandra Fluke. One word -= failure
Hmmmm, GW Bush stood before the nation and the congress at the state of the Union address and claimed he had information that the Congress did not have. Said Iraq had an active nuclear program. They didn't. Said they had an active chemical weapons program. They didn't. Said they had an active biological weapons program. They didn't. Said they had drones with 45 minute launch capability to reach America with chemical and biological weapon disbursement. They didn't. 4,000 Americans died and 40,000 American kids were wounded behind those lies. And NOW you're upset about 4 American lives? Sounds like partisan politics to me.
