Rupert Murdoch knew who was behind biased news coverage of the escalating Gaza violence. "Why Is Jewish owned press so consistently anti- Israel in every crisis?" Murdoch tweeted Saturday evening.
Within hours, though, the media mogul
had apologized.
"',Jewish owned press' have been sternly criticised, suggesting link to Jewish reporters. Don't see this, but apologise unreservedly," Murdoch tweeted Sunday morning. He also deleted his original post.
Murdoch seems to have taken to heart criticism expressed most prominently by Peter Beinart, editor of the left-wing "Open Zion" blog on The Daily Beast.
"As a smart friend points out, Murdoch's tweet is the equivalent of saying 'Why don't Jewish bankers loan more money to Jews?" Beinart wrote. "What's offensive is the suggestion that Jewish bankers should make professional decisions not as bankers, but as Jews."
But for Commentary's Jonathan S. Tobin, Murdoch had it basically right the first time around, even if the sentiments were worded poorly.
"As usual, Beinart has it backwards," Tobin wrote. "Far from wanting Jews in journalism to jettison their professional obligations, what media critics want is for them to return to a position of integrity and to tell the story of the Middle East conflict more accurately. If they did, media bias against Israel wouldn't be as much of a factor as it is today."
