Former DC Mayor Marion Barry Chastises 'Liberal White Folks'

Only they would care about who funds a turkey giveaway, he says

Former DC mayor and perpetual quote-generator Marion Barry has claimed that excessive concern with government transparency is a "liberal white" thing.

Barry told reporters that only "liberal white folks" would bother with inquiries into who purchased the turkeys for Barry's turkey giveaway this year. "I'm not ever telling," Barry said to the Washington City Paper. "You all beat up on good people for doing good things," he added.

Barry said his donors were worried about having their names listed on campaign finance reports, which are a mandatory component of the city's campaign finance laws. But as the WCP notes, donated turkeys are in fact exempt from such disclosure, so Barry need not tell anyway.

Still, with another DC politician volunteering information regarding who backed her turkey giveaway, Barry may be right to feel on the defensive. The city's Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander informed reporters that Safeway, Walmart, and United Healthcare ponied up for her birds.

Marion Barry, let's just say he the proverbial comedy gift that keeps on giving in DC. The guy is a joke. Here in the DC region we have a nickname for Barry; "Teflon Don". Everything he is accused of, he seems to get away with. Smoking Crack, dealing with Prostitution, Not paying his taxes, Getting into vehicle accidents (which he is at fault, yet still gets paid), I could go on all day about "Hizzonor". Teflon Don shouldn't be taken seriously, the folks here in the DC region don't take him seriously....
