Some will call it mission creep corrected. Others will call it a sad day for climate change awareness.
The CIA is shutting down its climate center, informs
Katie Pavlich at Townhall
, after being in operation for just over three years. Initially headed by current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, the Center on Climate Change and National Security was criticized shortly after its inception by congressional Republicans who successfully pressed to withdraw funding for its operations. According to Environment & Energy Publishing
, those involved in the climate center say it received little in-house support after Panetta left last year, and that under David Petraeus the CIA redirected its efforts to the organization's core mission of national defense. It was a move heartily endorsed by many within the GOP.
"Closing the Climate Change Center at the CIA was the right decision," said Republican Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming. "It's critically important for the CIA to focus its resources on preventing terrorism."
