No Violent Crimes In NYC on Monday

What explains this peculiar lack of crime?

The world is still reeling from the news that former hotbed of vice New York City forwent violent crime for the day on Monday of this week.

Public officials "were at a loss to explain it," and can't remember the last time this happened, says the NY Daily News.

Setting this one glorious day aside, crime stats in general look good for NYC. Murders are down 23% from 2011, and shootings are down 10%. Thefts are up, mainly because of a surge in stolen smartphones. And since 1994, when computerized records began, shootings have dropped from nearly 5,000 to just over 1500.

Some people are claiming this as a victory for Mayor Bloomberg's controversial stop-and-frisk-all-the-brown-young-men policy, but the jury, as they say, is still out on whether that works. (In other words, the statistics aren't conclusive.)

Racism...it's a good thing. Bloomberg is correct that the cops should be totally focused on harassing blacks and muslims....even going to so as to send cops into NJ and other locations outside the jurisdiction of NYC to spy on them. Why NYC is a model for America! Or all the violent crooks took the day off? Or its just a fluke?

Not at all. This is part of a nationwide trend in decreasing violent crime rates. It would be nice if there were no violent crimes , but a decrease is very good.

I lived in NYC for 20 years, never once got harassed or bothered. Nor did I know of personally anyone else enduring that either. NYC gets a bum rap, primarily from Hollywood and news media, when statistically per-capita, its one of the safest cities in the USA to live in. Conversely, other cities I lived in and for shorter times I had multiple problems: Atlanta, Boston, LA, Nashville, and even my hometown in Huntington, WV.

I previously spent a great deal of time in Nashville and never had any problem. What types of trouble did you encounter there? I'm wondering if I was just lucky or if the city has changed. I always felt that it was one of the safest cities I've visited.

Regardless of standards, it should still be celebrated. Any lack of violence is a very good thing. Maybe people are starting to see that violence is not the way to go? That's a dream as well but I don't think it's impossible, merely improbable.

Personally I think we can narrow it down a bit with limited resources. Stop and frisk any male under the age of 30 regardless of race. That's more than half the violent crime right there. Stop and frisk any drunk women in the presence of two or more men because she will instigate violence at some point that night. Frisk every man not with his own woman around her. If they are pants sagging (and white boys do it too) frisk them every block for 10 blocks on the grounds that they are illegally sidewalk sweeping. Stop and frisk every obese person in flip flops dragging their feet as they walk on the grounds of wearing down public concrete and they probably have shoplifted merchandise under their clothes if they can't pick up their feet. Stop and frisk every person with a bible on the grounds that they may belong to a religious cult and are fixing to picket someone for being dead as God's punishment for gays. Stop and frisk anyone with a Koran on the grounds they may be taking flying lessons. Stop and frisk anyone speaking a language other than English on the grounds they may be conspiring to blow up a building and just don't want us knowing about it. Stop and frisk all seniors on the grounds they probably have illegal street pharmaceuticals because they can buy them cheaper on the street than they can with Medicare part D.

Last but certainly not least, stop and frisk all Politicians on the ground they have been lying and lining their pockets since 10 minutes after they were first elected.

Seriously, having lived there for 10 years, I would attribute it more to grass roots organizations getting the "violence solves nothing" message across, but if the local "experts" can't explain it, no one can. Let's just hope it happens again. And again.
