President Rejects High-Skilled Immigration

The President appears hesitant to play favorites when it comes to who will enter the country, even if it's at the expense of national prosperity.

Nicholas Carlson at Business Insider informs us of Obama's decision not to support the STEM Act, which would favor giving visas to immigrants with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. The POTUS rejected the proposal because it would mean ditching another plan currently in existence, the "Diversity Visa" program, which awards visas through a lottery system to immigrants with merely a high school education.

Carlson seconds the opinion of Yale law school professor Peter Schuck that Obama's preferred immigration scheme makes the arrival of skilled foreigners into the country an "accident, not a policy." For Schuck, the solution is clear, and would involve soliciting "more high-skilled immigrants who produce jobs, innovation and new businesses."

How many new businesses? Consider the fact that over half of the tech startups in California's Silicon Valley are founded by foreign born residents.

    @Keyjo He is hoping the less educated will be democrats and in addition, he hates this country, so in his own little way, continue to destroy it! 69% of the people in Ohio without a high school diploma voted for Obama. He needs more uneducated people in the democratic party.

    I keep hearing conservatives talking about those damned "liberal colleges." That damned "liberal education." Why are conservatives so afraid of an educated population? Because they are afraid of progress, progressives. If it was up to conservatives,(not all, but too many), we'd all still be living in cabins, pooping in out houses, drinking well water: or perhaps be even MORE primitive.

    @Keyjo It does not appear that what education a liberal college provides, is adequate or normal. You might want to tell the Occupy Movement how to properly have a bowel movement utilizing proper toileting facilities and about their filthy tents!

    @FollowTheMoney their medai is afraid to put out most of the news as well,many reporters have been killed for it. thats why they use alot of blogs for safety reasons.wonder if our is in fear as well, if you read through borderland beat and other blog news sources like mundonarco you will see what is right next door.then wonder why our msm and gov is keeping this out of the public eye.

    I agree with you on this one. I have a friend a chemist grad, very intelligent. he fell outta status because of a broken immigration system and now does odd jobs here and there.

    I work in a very culturally and racially diverse company but for the sake of discussion here, guys, does the phrase "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe Free" not count any more. Do we - should we only require the elite for admission? I'm not aiming for condescension, just comments.

    @Rocker could be now that most citizens are now those tired and hungry huddled masses yearning to breath free. a country who will not put their own citizens first above all others is a country about to fall. look at all the newly graduated that cannot get these jobs while the cry for more workers is out by those looking to not hire an American citizen. a reporter pointed this out to obama,her husband a fresh engineer,shows the whole system.

    @tomincali -that argument tends to have a little traction. I have 2 PharmDs and an Engineer in the family that had a little trouble finding jobs, unless you discount Alaska, which they weren't willing to move to. The present job / economic environment is not conductive to seekers from within the US. During these times I can see slowing the influx of people coming in. Would you generalize that the situation in the US is reminiscent to the Roman Empire - too diverse supporting too many cultures?

    @Rocker nope not supporting too many cultures bringing in far too many when there are few jobs putting a huge number of those new comers right into welfare rolls.

    Roman empire just about what we are doing. slowing or stopping all immigration for awhile would be great for the citizens of the country. one thing for sure all who come here need to be held to their agreement

    Yup! I have to disagree with the President on this one. I think that we should be first seeking out the best, highest skilled we can. There are some 3.8 million unfilled, skilled jobs in the United States right now. We don't need more unskilled laborers. We need technologically savvy workers. Skilled immigrants and college and tech school available to ALL American students as an educational ENTITLEMENT.

    I think we might be wise to reject all immigration <"for a while"> and concentrate on bringing our country back to being the world leader it use to be. Secure our borders,pay down our debt,improve our schools and just basicly,get our head and ass wired back togeather.

He prefers "subjects" that are dependent upon the "compassion" from the welfare state that he is turning America into, all the while punishing those who want to become a success by redistributing their money to the lazy.

    Now what kind of backwards logic is he projecting? His top priority is to shift our nation into a third world country whose populice is void of independant thinking and dependant upon the government for survival.He is nothing more than a plague on our society and must be removed. America rewarded him with another term for bad decision making.

    this administration is advertising for low income poverty class people from Mexico to move here. they promise welfare benefits if they can get here....they are building their base and working americans are paying for it. obama doesnt want educated immigrants...they would not support his party.

    Agree that it should be more selective. We need people that can do the jobs that the rest of us are too dumb to do. I had to answer the opposite in the poll. I'll change my answer if the Statue of Liberty is taken down.

    I'll wager that if the majority of these people were Hispanic, he'd welcome each and every oner personally. He likes to buy votes, just like he did with the Dream Act.

    Ok, you can not have it both ways. Either you folks want everyone to wait there turn in the order they applied, or you don't. The anti-imigrant peope are just zuch hypocrites on these issues. First, there are a lot of intelligent people who comntribute to soceity without advanced degrees. Second the real issue is shouldn't we ne upgrading our own capacity to educate right here in the u.s., including the education of immigrants who live here to grow these types of skills here rather then importing this. The u.s. needs to be educating and turning out more folks that can do these jobs, people already here need the jobs, an we need the capacity to train people right hete...

    What a surprise! If President Obama isn't already wealthy now, he will be within two years of leaving the office of The President of the United States! And while I'm not saying that maybe he doesn't deserve it for serving, I don't think it a shock that a soon to be rich man doesn't want emigrants coming in and taking jobs that maybe their friends could be given. Not many qualified emigrants would move here with their families if all they got was minimum wage or less - AND the American Dream.
