A recliner for infants. It's an adorable idea until it's not.
CNN
reports that following five deaths and over seventy reports of infants nearly falling out of the items, a popular line of baby recliners will likely be no more and the company behind them forced to discontinue production.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is seeking to stop Pennsylvania-based Baby Matters, LLC, which manufactures the "Nap Nanny" and "Nap Nanny Chill" infant recliners, from further sales of the product. This in the wake of multiple complaints from irate mothers and the deaths of five babies since 2010. The product's maker, Leslie Gudel, a sportscaster and mother,
says the deaths are properly blamed on misuse, often via placement of the recliner on a table or crib when it's specifically designed for floor use. The government, however, disagrees.
"We believe it is a hazardous product and we are concerned about the safety of the children that are in there," said Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman Alex Flip, whose agency is seeking a court order requiring the company to inform the public of the defect and offer consumers a full refund.
