Jenny Sanford didn't stand by her man, and now she may be a senator. CNN's Peter Hamby reports that the former South Carolina first lady is among five people GOP Gov. Nikki Haley is considering appointing to the U.S. Senate.

"Her final choices for the seat are Rep. Tim Scott, Rep. Trey Gowdy, former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, former South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford and Catherine Templeton, a conservative attorney chosen by Haley to head the state Department of Health and Environmental Control," Hamby reports. "One thing they have in common: a warm personal relationship with the governor, who is known to prize loyalty."

Sanford would be the first woman senator from South Carolina. Two of the names on the list - Scott and McMaster - have been circulating since incumbent Jim DeMint announced last week he was leaving the Senate to take over the conservative Heritage Foundation

Sanford has largely kept a low profile since weathering a storm of scandal in 2009, when her husband, then-Gov. Mark Sanford, disappeared from the state to visit his girlfriend in Argentina. But earlier she was a driving force in Mark Sanford's political career, including six years in the House of Representatives and an underdog win for governor in 2002.

that would be insensitive and unloyal to the voters, who elected a republican or democrat. it could also be considered as, cruel and unusual punishment. in cases of a death, or resignation, the party continuity should be maintained. in a way that reflects the sentiments, of the voters without insulting them.

Either Rep Scott or Ms Sanford would help with the GOP's Party of Old White Guys problem, but it's tough to predict which one would actually be the better legislator - although Sen DeMint was certainly not a champ at that either.

I don't see how being a former First Lady qualifies anyone to be a Senator. I don't understand how it got Hillary Clinton elected, either. I guess name recognition is all it takes.

as a citizen of the republic of colorado, i feel this decision is best left up to the republic of south carolina. and hope that they reflect, the sentiments of the citizens who elected the previous senator. so as not to insult the citizens, while filling the now vacant senate seat.
