After some confused reporting of the weapons that were used in the tragic shooting, it's been confirmed that Adam Lanza used a Bushmaster .223 semi-automatic rifle, pictured above, to kill 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook school.
The Bushmaster is one model of the AR-15, which the NRA has campaigned to keep legal. The rifle shoots bullets at about 3,000 feet per second, and once they enter the target, "they explode throughout the tissue," according to WaPo.
Medical Examiner Wayne Carver, who performed some of the autopsies, explained that all of the children killed had been "hit more than once" and received a "very devastating set of injuries."
Because of those devastating wounds, only three children survived. The hospital in Danbury, CT readied itself for mass casualties when news of the shooting broke, but only three patients arrived.
The guns recovered at the scene by police included a Glock handgun and a Sig Sauer handgun, as well as the Bushmaster rifle. All of the guns were registered to one of Lanza's family members, reportedly his mother, who was also killed.
