Former GOP presidential contender Herman Cain is
lashing out at the
New York Times for running an op-ed saying black Republicans are "cynical tokens" for a party antithetical to black interests.
The
piece in question, written by political science professor Adolph L. Reed Jr., sidesteps the issue of sincerely held conservative beliefs on the part of some black Americans. Instead, it examines the role this "puzzling" group allegedly plays in advancing the GOP agenda while helping shield the party from accusations of racism.
"The trope of the black conservative has retained a man-bites-dog newsworthiness that is long past its shelf life," writes Reed. "Republicans will not gain significant black support unless they take policy positions that advance black interests."
It's an argument that's earned the
NYT the "racist" tag from Cain.
"Any newspaper that would publish a piece denigrating blacks as needing big government is obviously racist," claimed Cain. "To hear Professor Reed tell it, blacks are a monolithic group of people whose best interests are served when they can be recipients of redistributionist policies."
