Public parks aren't a buffet for the buff, warns the city of Santa Monica, California.
CBS
reports that officials in the sunny locale are considering a fine on fitness instructors who exploit city parks to host group exercise classes. The fine, the amount of which is unknown, would come in addition to a fee and special tax on organized park workouts put in place to compensate for property damage, say city representatives, who've also fielded noise complaints from angry residents.
It's a plan not terribly popular with those who've gotten used to flexing, stretching and otherwise burning calories in public without hassle.
"It would have us looking into moving to a different location," said Trainer Ruben Lawrence. "We would like to stay in Santa Monica, because that's the city where we're from and the community we would like to support."
Another area resident and entrepreneur thought regulation made sense, but found the idea of the city taking a cut of her profits perhaps as high as 15% a bit excessive: "We're a small, independently-owned businesses and, unfortunately, we would have to pass that percentage down to our clients."
