President Barack Obama didn't waste time ditching Washington after the New Year's fiscal cliff drama concluded with a tax-raising deal. Air Force One quickly jetted off to Hawaii, the president's native state, where he's finishing up a delayed winter vacation, CNN.com reports.
While in the Aloha State, the president made few appearances in public, though he fit in at least five rounds of golf and worked out at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii gym nearly daily. He stayed with his family at a house in Kailua on the island of Oahu, the third largest of the state's 132 islands.
Obama left the island late Saturday. He returns to Washington with several pressing issues on his plate, including the federal government's debt ceiling. The president is also expected to make announcements on Cabinet positions soon.
I wonder how many young liberals think it's unfair that the President gets to go on a vacation to Hawaii on the taxpayer dime but all they got from the fiscal cliff deal was an extension of a tax credit that allows middle- and low-income families a tax deduction of up to $2,500 a year in education expenses for four years?
I was also surprised to learn that Obama and Michele before Obama was elected, made four times as much income and gave half as much to charity as I do. It's a shame he can't be as stingy with the tax payers money.
If you actually take the time to look at the holiday rate of other Presidents, who have taken more holidays and consider the stress of the job, thus the need for some down time, I think Obama has got the balance fairly right.
How on earth can a family spend $20M on vacations? Never mind...Moochie demands tighter security than any previous first lady, while it has been reported she consumes the finest lobster and caviar to the tune of several thousands of dollars per day. The Royal Family has spent $57 thousand on an equal number of vacations...
Every president spends too much time "on vacation". Every president talks about "the poor people who can't get by when Washington spends money like water over a dam" and every president spends money on vacations like water over a dam. And every opposition party to the President complains to high heavens about it. And the beat goes on, yeah the beat goes on.
Though 120 days a year is NOT enough, congressmen and senators have duties to their respective "home" state. The president's "home" state is D.C.! HMMM, comparing either congress/senate in session time to president's "vacation" time = not a good comparison. Try again!
A pathetic excuse for a president was GWB he knowingly allowed 9/11 to happen blew up the Pentagon to cover up that he lost 3 trillion dollars started two pointless wars by bold faced lying to America and the world 1 of those wars was illegal he fumbled hurricane disaster crashed the economy doubled the debt under his two terms and then continued to add even more debt under Obama all whole spending more than half of the time on vacation nothing like what happend under bush has happend on Obamas watch he's not perfect but he's 10x better that that stupid drunk cowboy or the stupid moron vulture capitalist Mormon mitt Romney
A vacation every 6 wks since he became Prez, ummm yea, at a time when many Americans are out of work, and many of them aren't even counted anymore because they are out of unemployment benefits. Our so called leader goes on a 20 million dollar vacation. Obama is a complete A--hole.
@Mogal George Bush was one hell of a President but you need to accept that he's not still in office and there's a new guy in his job.
I understand that this new guy isn't very impressive to you, he doesn't impress me either but as much as you hate to face fact, George W. Bush isn't President anymore so you can stop bitching about how bad a job he's doing.
For your edification, some guy from Kenya via Illinois was elected in the 2008 Elections and actually moved into the White House in January 2009. I think you can verify that through the US Postal Service as George W. Bush's mail is being forwarded to his ranch in Texas.
While the guy from Kenya isn't doing much as President, evidenced by your confusion as well as many others, he is the President with all of the duties, perks and responsibilities as George Bush had when he was in office.
This new guy has been there for almost FOUR YEARS and seems to have mastered the "perks" of office part quite well but obviously has failed to impress you with his performance of duties or accepting responsibilities. I feel your pain.
BTW.... he's going to be there for another four years, practicing his golf game and his MBWA (Managing By Wandering Aimlessly) management style. He'll be very good at being an Ex-President, something he obviously is perfectly suited for.
Sorry to ruin your day... but I didn't vote for him.... I was hoping that we would elect a President who wanted to do his job instead of a guy who has never held one.
@Mogal are u still talking about the Prez from 5 years ago? Well since then unemyment has gone way up, and Obama has spent more than the last 5 Presidents combined, we faced a finacial cliff, now we are looking at debt ceiling cliff. Also Bush' wife did not already have 27 personal assistants like Obama's, so she hardly needed a vacation. Also the Bush family did not cost America 1.7 billion dollars a year in personal living expenses, Obama's did last year. Obama, undisputed spending king.
As a resident who lives in the DC Metro Region, I have to go with you on this one. Although since 0bama is also Chicagoan I think the President should suck it up and handle the Nation's business. For the record, I was equally critical of Bush when he was off vacationing...
This topic is a waste. It wasn't important 8 years ago when a FEW liberals complained about all the time Bush spent on vacation while 2 unnecessary wars were being fought and it isn't important now when almost all of the conservatives are hating on Obama for him taking a well earned vacation after killing Osama bin Laden, winding down Bush's 2 unnecessary wars and putting a Chicago style beat down on the Boehner and the GOP congress in the fiscal cliff negotiations.
@Politicskid when did fox say other wise??? Fox has zero credibility who cares what they say they've been fact checked to many times to count on live tv every single member of their cast has been busted lying multiple times they've been busted changing results to favor their views and then they just don't cover any news that they don't like and then lie about it multiple study's from Multiple different years all say fox viewers are THE stupidest of any other news network so Im going to say it again Fox News makes you stupid that's a fact and Obama hasn't spent to much days on vacation
@Politicskid I can't find anything that proves that. Can you, and maybe post a link? Either way, I don't think campaign trips are vacation. Believe me, they're just as grueling on the candidate as governing.
But you do have a point: these are trips that take POTUS out of the office, away from governing in D.C. I actually think that the President needs to get out of Washington more often. Like early on in the fiscal cliff negotiations, he went out and rallied a lot, engaging the American people.
The President (regardless who it is, or what party they hail from) has to travel via Air Force 1 and with security detachment. Another thing he takes on vacation with him, or anywhere else he goes, is the risk of being shot to death. Lets see any ONE of you posters take that on your next trip.
@artjeb Oh well, that's the beauty of being a target, you don't have to go on vacation for that. You can walk out of your door and be a target too. Which is what the President does every time he leaves the White House.
Elizabeth the II's annual government stipend is just under 13 million. She acts as the figurehead of not only UK but of the various commonwealth realms and the head of many commonwealth nations. Her Majesty is the queen of the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia just to name a few. Obama has spent about 1.4 Billion a year. As a publicly elected politician! Wow; he lives like an old school French Monarch.
