Senator: 'Harry Reid Has Again Revealed Himself To Be An Idiot'

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is known for his tart-tongue, having called then-President George W. Bush a "loser" and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "embarrassment". Now the NV Democrat is on the receiving end of some un-senatorial language.

"Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot," Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), in a statement, blasting Reid's recent comments that Hurricane Sandy last year was more devastating the Hurricane Katrina in 2005. "Both Katrina and Sandy were horribly destructive storms that caused real human misery. And by most any measure, Katrina was our worst natural disaster in history," Vitter said.

"In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused 1,833 deaths and over $108 billion in damage. Hurricane Sandy has caused 131 deaths and $65 billion in damage. These numbers are according to the National Hurricane Center."

Reid said Monday he "misspoke" - but didn't apologize. "In my recent comments criticizing House Republicans for threatening to betray Congress' tradition of providing aid to disaster victims in a timely fashion regardless of region, I simply misspoke," Reid said in a statement.

@jamesmitchell - This entire country. We're spending more, taxing more, and have more and more unemployed people. There are too few pulling the cart, yet the cart is overloaded. I wish I could be more like you. No, I truly mean that. None of the problems loading down our once great nation seem to affect you much. These issues way heavy on my heart. I hate that Reid is trying to compare Katrina and Sandy, especially when both hurricanes were on different magnitudes, different regions, and during different eras. So sad...

Not saying which was worse, just saying that as Senator from Lousiana he has every right and in fact the obligation to call out anyone that seeks to minimize Katrina, so I hope that my support for a republican, limited as it is, lifts your spirits.

@PoliticalSpice I'm not positive but IIRC Vitter was one of those GOPers discouraging Katrina evacuees from returning because New Orleans was a democratic city. The loss of several hundred thousand potential democratic voters was thought of as good for Louisiana by some on the right.
