Labor Secretary Hilda Solis Is Resigning

One of many Cabinet departures as President Obama's second term begins

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, a former Democratic House member and state legislator from Southern California, is leaving her job. Solis will be the fifth member of the administration to leave the Cabinet (or announce her departure) since the election.

In an email message, Solis says she submitted her resignation letter to President Barack Obama on Wednesday afternoon. She says she made the decision to leave after discussing it with her family and close friends.

Solis has won praise from labor unions for aggressive enforcement of wage and hour laws and job safety regulations. But business groups have criticized her as not taking a more cooperative approach.

Huffington Post White House reporter Sam Stein (@samsteinhp) tweeted, "Rep. Rosa DeLauro was in consideration for Labor Secretary in 08. White House needs a female member in its cabinet."

Politico correspondent Jonathan Allen (@jonallendc) noted about the changeover at Labor, "Kathleen Sebelius (at No. 12) could be the highest woman in the line of presidential succession pretty soon, now that Hilda Solis is leaving".

And Huffington Post Social Media Editor Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) wrote, "Ken Salazar now the only Hispanic in Obama's cabinet, with Solis' resignation."

Much ado about nothing. They come and they go and the beat goes on. She won't be missed nor will her successor be any better or worse. It's not a destiny defining position.

Agreed. I had forgotten about her La Raza days before she got hired on. She's scum. She'll probably go work as their PR person. I wonder how the benefits are with a terrorist organization like La Raza? Good dental maybe?

What I think people are missing is that Cabinet secretaries do the bidding of their president. It makes little difference the name or face. They just do as they are told.

@jessejaymes Hmmm....I wonder if I should apply for a cabinet position? If the only requirement is do what I am told, not think, and collect a paycheck, I can do that. Not to mention a travel and expense account I can abuse I think I can do that job quite well.:)

You should apply as well. martydotcom could use a job...or even politicalspice or raptor.
