Democratic mayors and governors plan sweeping gun control

While federal gun control proposals have so far been modest - focusing on a renewed assault weapons ban and background checks - gun control plans laid by Democratic state lawmakers have been much more sweeping.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo intends a ban on ammunition magazines with a capacity higher than 7 rounds. (The current NY limit is 10 rounds.)

Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel has ordered the city to stop investing pension funds in companies that make assault weapons.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has proposed a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, and a comprehensive licensing system for handguns.

And New York City's Mayor Bloomberg is asking Joe Biden to enact wholesale federal gun control measures, including a background check for the purchase of all firearms.

And all these laws, regulations and proposals + a couple hundred dollars will still buy the "unlawful" just about any gun they want! Besides, if I want an assault gun, I know I just have to visit Mexico! I heard the CIA gives them out down there for free!

Yes, they are. Yes, they are a threat. No, they will not succeed. All they will do is to turn honest, taxpaying citizens into criminals, at least according to the book. The big test will be if they can actually get the police to enter homes to go after the guns, and what will happen if the cops try. Instead of dealing with the real problems, both the existing problems on the streets and the problem of mental health issues, the Liberals choose to go after homeowners who want to protect their property and legal, rural hunters. My prediction is that people hold onto their guns, and anything that is not legal is not reported. No way I turn in any of my magazines or my guns. Everyone I talk to feels the same. So unless the Liberals get Law Enforcement to do a house by house search of every neighborhood they won't find them....and we won't tell.

I understand the visceral response to the senseless killing of children. I have kids and grandchildren of my own. But, these knee-jerk reactions that produce bad laws are not the way to go. If you don’t like the wording of the Second Amendment, then hold a constitutional convention and change it ... Do not try to redefine and circumvent it. Remember, as it stands, the most important words in the 2nd Am. Are,“... Shall not be infringed.” That means ANY restrictions on gun ownership are illegal under the constitution. Don’t like that? Change it. Have a convention and let the people have their say ... And their vote!

@AceLuby The NRA is a big part of it, yes, but part of it is the media, too. Politix gets the hits by adding blurbs about it, so they add more blurbs. The TV networks do the same. They all seem desperate for a gut-level, emotional issue to put people into dramatic conflict and the budget is too cerebral a subject to get that same hormone-level response. It's going to be a long three years till they have the next election to wallow in, I think.

Can some one do me a favor? Actually what weapons are register? I was having a debate with a friend and I said only handguns are registered if bought at places like Walmart. He stated no weapons are registered. Can some one help me out with this?

Roco, registration of firearms is basically a state issue. I cannot tell you which are registered in any specific state. I can tell you that in my state, none are registered. Yes, when buying a firearm from a licensed dealer, you do fill out a form and a background check is performed. The dealer must keep, I forget the form number, but the dealer must keep that form for X amount of time. After that time, these forms are to be destroyed......however, most dealers still keep them. Hope this has helped.

They want to please the liberal citizens of their states who are the ones making the most noise. They have a tendancy to do that. You always hear left wing liberals making a ruckus about some subject or another. Maybe the moderates and conservatives should raise a stink about anything they want also. The loud ruckus these liberals make is probably why they think they are the majority on all issues. They can't hear anyone else's opinion because they will not shut up long enough to do so. Also, and a gun owner and a person that stands by out second amendment, I don't care about the size of magazine clips and I need to know exactly what guns they consider to be assault rifles. That is too broad a term.

The NRA is too strong to really get any serious gun control at this time. The dems are using this as a wedge issue to keep the righties occupied and hopefully make them look stupid in the public's mind. They image of a bunch of gun nuts screaming about their 2nd amendment rights contrasts while funerals for those poor kindergarten children are going on doesn't help the GOP at all. Making the GOP look more extreme on guns and the economy puts the dems in a stronger position for 2014 and beyond.

The NRA is strong because it actually crosses political lines on a one issue item. Democratic politicians need to understand something the more you tell someone they can't have something the more they want it. You obviously haven't been around people who have NRA stickers and Union stickers on their hardhats maybe then you'd begin to grasp that people's votes aren't always a guarenteed slam dunk.
