Obama Issues 23 Executive Orders on Gun Control

And he told Congress to pass universal background check and assault weapons ban

President Obama this morning announced 23 executive orders to help prevent gun violence. You can read the entire list of actions here.

Obama's orders included:

1. Toughening up the federal background check system.

2. Helping schools hire more resource officers and develop emergency preparedness plans.

3. Ordering the CDC to start researching gun violence.

4. Clarifying that doctors and therapists are allowed to report threats of gun violence.

And here's what Obama asked from Congress:

1. Pass a universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun.

2. Restore the ban on assault weapons and magazines holding over 10 bullets. That would prevent massacres like Aurora, said Obama. "Weapons designed for the theater of war have no place in a movie theater," he added.

3. Get tougher on gun criminals and people who helps criminals buy guns. And put more police on the streets.

Obama called his measures "common sense" and insisted he's not against gun ownership. He said emphatically that he respects the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

You are probably right about the effects of these executive orders. What I think Obama is doing is indicating his willingness to mix it up with the GOP. Remember just yesterday one of the GOP goobers from TX threatened to impeach him if he used his constitutional right to issue executive orders on gun control. This is a direct challenge to that. So far in his presidency he has gotten a lot of criticisms from the left for not coming out and fighting for what he believes in. Obama seems to be more willing to fight since the election. When Boehner asked him what Obama would give him in exchange for the tax increases he told him "you get nothing". I think we are going to see a more combative President in the second term. This combined with a weakened GOP will mean good things for the country.

It wouldn't be so bad if he weren't beating your friend too. What does Obama have to do before you start calling bullshit for what it is? It doesn't matter does it? Citing your previous post explaining how proud you were to elect a black president. It's racism isn't it? As long as black man is in office he can do no wrong? If Obama were white, and committed the same actions, would your response be different? These are questions for you to ask yourself.

I support the PROPOSALS. I don't support the decrees. The continuation of the frequent use of executive orders needs to stop. Lead by example and stand up for what you stood up for in 2008 and stop the continuation of the REGIME created by Bush.

@RightisRight I agree, 9 mass shootings happened the year of Columbine in 1999 alone. 7 happened in 2012. There's no clear evidence that supports either stance because guns aren't the problem it's the choice the people have to choose between good and bad.

OK I find it very strange that within 4 weeks of a shooting we have major reform on gun laws both federally and in some states.

We have had 4 yrs of economic woes, joblessless and the crimes stemming from joblessness (like shootings). And to fix it we have Obeiner spinning their wheels and putting things off. Trillions added to the debt in this time, and the big drama now is how to INCREASE said debt??
And in all that time they couldn't get together on one meaningful piece of legislation to fix this catastrophe happening before our eyes?? What is the averge American supposed to think?

Once again the people of America gets the govt you deserve. This thread will rant and rave over things that have nothing to do with lowering the deficit, reining in spending or getting our military back home. 60% of America wants gun control. The president is responding to that hysteria. Nothing he asks for is unreasonable yet nothing he's saying will prevent another Newtown because it's not preventable. It is what it is. An appeasement to the majority of Americans. Most of what he is saying will be killed in the House and it's back to business as usual. The rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer and the destruction of the middle class. And the beat goes on, yeah the beat goes on.

I'd like to focus in on this "executive" order from Obama -
"14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence."

According to current law,“None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” http://finance.yahoo.com/news/nra-killed-gun-...

In effect, we have a single man advocating a clear and obvious illegal action from the White House. If the law has no power, then what power does this single man have?

The language of the law seems to me to fail the "prior restraint" test the Supreme Court defined to determine if government action amounts to censorship in violation of the 1st amendment. This will be an interesting court test, if someone decides to take it to the judiciary.
