Ray Nagin, the former New Orleans mayor, has been charged with 21 counts of corruption, including bribery, wire fraud, money laundering and tax fraud.

Nagin, a Democrat, allegedly accepted bribes from contractors while New Orleans was battling to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The bribes included free cellphone service for the mayor's family, air travel and limousine services, and checks for amounts like $50,000. For example, Nagin accepted money and services worth $160,000 from one businessman and $60,000 from another.

All but one of the contractors involved in bribery have already been convicted or admitted their guilt.
