Despite the reportedly hostile environment
faced by women in the US military, a new survey finds that the most satisfied employees in the armed services are in fact female.
The
Washington Post passes along the findings of research
published in
American Sociological Review showing that women claimed higher job satisfaction than men when it comes to opportunities for advancement and promotion. And in supposedly stark contrast to private sector workplaces, the difference holds true for black and Hispanic women as well. Indeed, black women were more satisfied with their military careers than any other group.
"For women," said study designer Jennifer Hickes Lundquist, "pay and job benefits are more equal in the military than in the civilian labor."
Who were the
least satisfied members of the armed forces? White men.
"Compared to their peers in civilian society, white males lose many of the advantages that they had," claimed Lundquist.
