Feinstein Introduces Assault Weapons Ban

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, introduced a bill Thursday that would ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, one of the most contentious proposals in the president's comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence.

The bill, expected to meet fierce opposition in Congress, would ban the sale, transfer, manufacturing or importation of more than 150 types of firearms, including semiautomatic rifles or pistols that can be used with ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and have military-style features including pistol grips, grenade launchers or rocket launchers, the Washington Post reports.

Weapons already legally owned when the law takes effect would be exempt, but background checks would be required prior to the sale or transfer of them. Sale or transfer of large capacity magazines owned before the law took effect would not be allowed. "No weapon is taken from anyone," said Feinstein. "The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time."

The bill includes exemptions for more than 2,000 firearm models used for hunting or sporting purposes. Unlike the 1994 assault weapons ban that expired after ten years, the new proposal would be permanent.

Feinstein vowed to push for the measure after last month's shooting rampage at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that killed 20 first-graders.

Unfortunately as good as reasonable gun control would be for the country the NRA is too powerful still to get it passed. The dems would be wiser to back off of this issue for now until the tea bag faction of the GOP damages the republican brand some more. Perhaps sometime after Hillary Clinton is elected we will be able to get something like this passed. Not now.

This is very poor timing since she knows she can't get it passed. She's been overshadowed by boxer in years past and not really much of a senator that the people of California identify with. @Canoochee @Tomincali This bill has no teeth because she know it will NOT pass. This is part of the process. Going to go to the house I have the option to vote it up/down or revise it and send it back to the Senate. You won't see language of how it will be a forced into it is close to becoming a law.

@Canoochee No I did not get the urge to kill people but I will say it is very scary the killing power they obtain. Also, the guns Adam Lanza used to murder 20 5 year olds were legally purchased and registered in his mothers name. Now with that being said you tell me if a ban on assault rifles and high capacity clips (such as what he used) would have stopped innocent children from being brutally being murdered? If military weapons were banned prior to Adams mother purchasing them, 20 5 year olds would have been able to still be living right now.

I'm a gun owner. I have two sons who were in the military and are no longer with us. I have one son who is a small arms instructor for the United States Navy who learned his trade from me way before he joined the armed forces. Rights are always contingent on need. The need for freedom. With freedom and rights comes rules and regulations. No one is free to do whatever they like or want to do. No person that is a regular citizen of this country needs an assault rifle. They may want one but they don't need one.

Unfortunately, this still misses the point. The issue is that they don't enforce existing laws. They need to close some loopholes, and fully check backgrounds. This would prevent most of the issues. Most gun-owners want to be safe with them and have them for legitimate reasons. All this will do is make it illegal to own some large capacity clips. Why don't they make bank robbery illegal next, so we don't have any banks robbed?
