All American women age 14-46 should be screened for domestic violence whenever they visit their primary care doctor.
That's according to according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, who recommend that doctors ask all women of childbearing age about intimate partner abuse. The recommendation carries the force of law, because anything the task force recommends has to be covered without copay under Obamacare. One of the recommended screening tools consists of the following four questions:
1. How often does your partner physically hurt you?
2. How often does your partner insult or talk down to you?
3. How often does your partner threaten you with harm?
4. How often does your partner physically scream or curse at you?
If doctors learn of abuse, they're advised to offer intervention services, including counseling and home visits.
The recommendations mark a sharp shift from 2004, when the task force deemed the evidence to support widespread screenings inadequate, the LA Times reports.
CDC estimates suggest that over 30% of women and 26% of men have been abused by a partner.
