u May 11 oldsolder v Yes, absolutely When I lived in Italy I had to learn Italian, when I lived in Germany I had to learn German. Don't expect me to learn your language when you are living in my country. You want to live in this country, learn the language and the laws and obey them or leave, it's all or nothing. B1 Post

Apr 30 Bill2E v Yes, absolutely If you want to assimilate then learn the language, and assimilation is part of citizenship. Learn what this county is all about and learn to live with the country you are moving to. Learn the language and don't expect your new country to learn your history, we are not moving to your country and asking for citizenship. Post
u Apr 30 Buckfan4life2 v Yes, absolutely Now I guess if I looked at it in the eyes of a liberal or a latino, it should be me and all of my fellow American born citizens who should be good little host and learn to speak Spainish first and only then, we shall see from there rather they need to learn English or not. r1 reply Post
u Apr 30 bleakoutlook I'm liberal and voted no only because its really up to the individual to assimilate to their surroundings. It just makes it harder on the individual to not learn the language. Still up to them though. Post @bleakoutlook
Apr 29 darkmoonman v Yes, absolutely I speak several languages, even though English is my L1, but if I moved to another country, I'd do my best to learn the local language rather than arguing it hasn't one (the USA has English by precedent) or that I don't want to and expect the people or the government to accommodate me. Post
Apr 28 meHereInKS v Yes, absolutely It is wrong to hire someone in the USA who can not speak English, yet many do! Myself, I am without a phone right now due to this very problem!! AT&T hired someone with a very heavy accent, and she kept messing everything up in our conversation, ultimately I am now without a phone! grr! I am sick of calling businesses, even biz-giants and all the people working there do not speak English worth a daren. It's unfair to any english-speaking American! Post
u Apr 26 BossTweed v I have mixed feelings here No need whatsoever If they only want to be household help, strawberry pickers, or car washers or....... just simply live off the increasingly pathetic American Tax Slaves they shouldn't go to the trouble of learning the language of business and commerce in America. Post
Apr '13 RealAmerica v Yes, absolutely Immigrants that demand translation services should do so at their own cost, and not at the cost of American taxpayers. Post
Apr '13 spytheweb v Yes, absolutely "Students who have been designated "English learners" make up one-quarter of all California public school students; 85% are U.S.-born. Continued failure to teach them English â they are among the lowest-performing groups of students â will leave them further behind and jeopardize California's future, the report said." 85% are US born, can't speak English!!! This is what happen when you allow illegal aliens to be born US citizens. Post
Mar '13 night5hift v Yes, absolutely LEGISLATORS SHOULD HAVE DEMANDED ENGLISH SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING.TODAY THERE ARE NATURALIZED INDIVIDUALS THAT DONT SPEAK ENGLISH AND ILLEGALS THAT SPEAK/WRITE/READ ENGLISH Post
Jan '13 Politicskid v Yes, absolutely OF COURSE. Legal immigrants have to do it; why should people who violated our laws get a pass? Anyway, it's in the best interest of all immigrants to know English B1 r5 replies e61 endorsed Post
Jan '13 Neo_NtheMatrix v Yes, absolutely It is because I would never think of moving to Germany and expecting the Germans to learn English in order to accommodate me, or would I dream of moving to Thailand and expecting the Thais to accommodate me either, I would expect that if anyone would want to migrate to our country that they would want to learn our language, our customs, our culture and try to fit in with us. After all, what is it they liked about our country? What attracted them to us? If we change all of that then would we still be the same attractive nation? English should be a must to come here. I'd definitely learn Arabic or Spanish or whatever language if I decided to migrate to a non-English spe... r1 reply e48 endorsed Post
Jan '13 Ginoo9 v No, it's unfair Unless we make English the official language of the United States of America it is unfair and illegal to make language a part of the citizenship process. B2 r1 reply e16 endorsed Post
Jan '13 DARSB v Yes, absolutely I don't understand the question: it's already a requirement. "Be able to read, write, and speak English and have knowledge and an understanding of U.S. history and government (civics)." http://goo.gl/vG2qf But I would guess there are plenty of natural born citizens who couldn't meet this requirement, especially the "civics" part. ;) e13 endorsed Post

Jan '13 ACTSmom v Yes, absolutely Anyone wishing to be a citizen needs to assimilate with other citizens. Most of us speak English. Our laws are written in English. Most U.S. states have English as the official language. Our education is primarily taught in English except for those ESL students and specific language classes. Having to rewrite everything in every possible language only causes more confusion and costs a lot more of our tax dollars. e7 endorsed Post
Jan '13 Waynestew v I have mixed feelings here English is a very complex language with many different dialects. Are we talking English or Americanized English? Exactly how much English would they have to know? Just enough to get by,or would they have to be fluent? Besides that I thought it was already a requirement to learn English to become a citizen. Let me add many people born and raised in America do not know how to speak proper English. e7 endorsed Post
Jan '13 Your_Name_Here v Yes, absolutely I think English should be mandated as the official language of the USA. I think it is racist that the government (ie: our tax dollars) prints official documents in English and Spanish only. Why are the several hundred other spoken languages not represented? B1 e6 endorsed Post
u Jan '13 Yank v I have mixed feelings here First of all we do not speak English. We may call it English, but it is an Americanized English (English mixed with Swedish, German, France, Spanish, and a couple dozen other languages). Second before we even think of making people learn "English", wouldn't we have to pass an official national language? e5 endorsed Post
u Jan '13 commonsense51 v Yes, absolutely Yes i think Obama should learn to speak English before he becomes a citizen of this nation. B2 r1 reply e2 endorsed Post
