Senate overwhelmingly confirms longtime senator

John Kerry is America's new chief diplomat. The Senate Tuesday confirmed the longtime Massachusetts senator and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee 94-3.

The move brings to an end 28 years of service in the Senate for Kerry, who has been chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He succeeds Hillary Clinton, the former first lady, New York senator and herself an unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a fellow Democrat, will appoint an interim successor to Kerry. A special election will then be held to complete the final year-and-a-half or so of Kerry's term.

"Look for @MassGovernor to name interim senator Weds AM. Former top aide Mo Cowan? Carole Fulp tweeted CNN reporter John King (@JohnKingCNN).

@Pete-o She wouldn't have declared a "war"...her boss would...and he DID...Mali. I also don't seem to remember Emperor Bush II launching drone wars into Pakistan. So if she did start a war, she launched at least two.

Hillary did such a great job that Kerry will be lucky to maintain the status quo. The only reason that the GOP approved him is that it will open up his senate seat and they think that poster boy Scott Brown has a chance of winning it. Otherwise they would have huffed and puffed and filibustered away.

@PNWest Bet they don't. I don't personally care but Brown is a moderate in a liberal state. The Dems had to spend like CRAZY to unseat him with their liberal darling. Scott will easily win back.

@jessejaymes We'll see. The dems lost a senate seat once because they were too sure of things. I doubt they make that mistake again. The dems won the senate seat by 7.5% - a pretty health margin.

PNWest Lets be honest, i know you think that Hillary is great and she is what the country needs and i will admit that she is a hard worker, but she did'nt accomplish very much during her tenure as Secretary of State. For instance Iran is moving ever closer to a nuclear weapon with the capability too deliver that weapon via ballistic missile, North Korea is even more dangerous and is sharing their techology with other rouge nations. The Palistinians and the Israelies are still at each other's throat, no peace treaties there, the peace treaty between Eygpt and Israel could also be in jeapordy. As for Bengazi, "what difference does it make", however i hope for the country's sake that Secretary Kerry does accomplish something for all of us!
