Sen. Dianne Feinstein isn't the only lawmaker trying to ban assault weapons. Another longtime gun control advocate, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, is offering similar legislation in the House.

McCarthy, a New York Democrat, has pushed similar legislation for more than a decade. Gun control is the issue that led her to run for Congress. On December 7, 1993, her husband, Dennis, was killed and her son, Kevin, severely injured on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train when spree killer Colin Ferguson opened fire on passengers.

Her bill, introduced Jan. 29, aims "to regulate assault weapons, to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited." The proposal is substantially similar to that offered recently by Sen. Feinstein, a California Democrat. That bill would ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

    How very narrow minded. Perhaps you'd like to reference Honduras, or several other countries for that matter, which has the highest murder rate and murder rate by guns despite extremely strict gun control laws. Also before you start in with the tired bullshit of well those are third world countries keep in mind a third world country is determined by economy, industry, and standard if living, none of which have an influence on the effectiveness of gun control legislation. Additionally firearm deaths in the US very rarely occur from use of a rifle and an even smaller portion of those deaths are from assault style rifles. Even if laws were passed and by some form of magic you could actually get criminals who already ignore other laws to abide by them, the reduction in gun violence.would be next to nothing if any at all. Those facts that contradict your stance are so very annoying aren't they?

    hardly, the right to own weapons has been very regulated since the amendment was written and ratified. Sad that people who call themselves citizens don't know this....why don't you know about the country you live in?

    Mrs. McCarthy if your husband was armed he could of protected himself and your son and then you would be rejoicing gun owners. It's always a catch 22. If my son was chewing bubble gum and choked, would I be just for banishing Wrigley's? Give me a break. I can understand your pissed at guns because you can not put your hands literally on the person who killed your husband.

    @Angry_man You're ignorant on this. If her husband were armed he would be in prison. NY has very strict gun laws, he wouldn't be permited to have a carry permit, especially on the long island rail road. states rights and the second amendment allow state regulation of firearms. In this case you are saying people should break the law.

    @PoliticalSpice in this case yes. Have you ever gone over the speed limit? This is the perfect scenario, if guns are taken away from Americans the bad guy still has the gun and the upper hand. Why is it so hard to get this through your liberal heads. Do you think this can't happen to you? What are you going to do swing your purse at him? Pray a cop is in the same rail car?

    @Angry_man What part of it is illegal in this state to own a gun do you not understand? Think its the same thong as breaking the speeding laws? Tell you what, bring a hun onto the amyrack and see what happens if you get caught. That is the position your post implies this person should have put themselves in. Are you saying anyone who doesn't break the law is a liberal? You really are off the deep end. I am not a liberal, i support the second amendment, but i'm not going to commit a crime just to satisfy your concept of what others should do. Have you ever served mandatory time in prison for going over thd speed limit? That is the penalty for illegal gun possesion here. People are supposed to break the law and do that just cause of what you think? It has nothing to do with liberalism, it has everything to do with state law, and incidently the second amendment and states rights. Did i tell you to commit sodomy in georgia before it was legal? Come down here, change the law and then you can lecture people on carrying guns. Till then stay angry, but be less ignorant about things you are commenting on.     @PoliticalSpice please allow me to retort! Yes you CAN own a gun in your state!!! Second of all you agreeing with the second amendment doesn't make you a conservative. Most of what I said was a general statement. But as far as your metro rail goes we have one also in this state. And yes it is against the law to carry a "hun" on it. Do I, you ask? Dang right! It's called self preservation. If some lunatic got on the metro rail with a gun with intent to harm passengers or myself I would blow him away like lint, even if I had to serve time. The old saying goes " it's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six." Oh and also, try spell check before you go off on a rant so we'll know what your talking about.

    I support yhe 2nd and detest Feinstein for doing this, but a little understanding to a women who was not a politcian and only became involed after her husband was murdered and her son shot and maimed on a train. I don't agree with her, but cut her some slack. Would you begrudge a rape victim for supporting castration?

    How do you regulate something that you can not properly identify? What exactly constitutes an assault weapon? Eye catching amenities that have no effect to firing capabilities should not make it an assault weapon because, It doesn't.

    Perhaps the phrase "well regulated militia" rings a bell? the list of people who couldn't owna gun when the 2nd was adopted was a couple pages long. the kinds of weapons you can't own now is huge. the 2nd isn't a right without limitations.

    Interesting Analysis - Ban Democrats from owning guns

    Some Facts:
    Those who steal guns and then use them to kill movie goers, young children in school, fellow college students, etc. have never proven to be conservative NRA members.

    Ft Hood - Registered Democrat; jihadist Muslim.

    Columbine - Too young to vote; both families were registered Democrats.

    Virginia Tech - Wrote hate mail to President Bush and to his staff; Registered Democrat.
    Colorado Theater - Registered Democrat; staff worker on the Obama campaign; Occupy Wall Street participant.
    Connecticut School Shooter - Registered Democrat; hated Christians.

    Common thread is that all of these shooters were progressive liberal Democrats.

    Solution:
    Ban Democrats from owning guns! <smile>

    Remember when the liberal media and their sycophants tried to blame the shooting of Gabriel Giffords, et al on Conservative talk radio and a host of other imaginary conservative causes? It all fizzled when we learned that he was a liberal left wing kook. The silence from the frothing liberal media was deafening...

    Remember when the shooting at Newtown, Ct revealed that they found an AR-15 (Assault rifle) in the trunk of the shooters car, not in the school? Well, it seems that the liberal media tried to hide that fact from the public for political reasons? It was found that the carnage was inflicted by 4 hand guns, not an AR-15. So much for truth in reporting from the 'lame stream media' and this WH...

    While I feel for Rep. McCarthy....she should be spending time trying to fix the mental health problem than banning guns that weren't even used in her particular case....Colin Ferguson legally purchased a handgun after the state of New York checked his background.....at the time he was deemed not a threat or wasn't a convicted felon.....nothing beyond the total ban on private gun ownership could have stopped this tragedy.

    No, I don't support it because it is based on hysterics over a handful of isolated,albeit horrific incidents which are anomalies and not the rule around the country. Because 1) "Assault Weapons", i.e. TRUE assault weapons, are already covered by the NFA and properly registered, monitored and taxed. 2) The arbitrary label of "Assault Weapon" is being applied to SEMI-AUTOMATIC firearms, including RIFLES, PISTOLS AND SHOTGUNS. 3) Semi-Automatic Rifles, like the AR15 AND AK47, AND LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINES, and I quote US Department of Justice "...were rarely used to commit crimes in this country". The Sponsors of this bill are LYING to the American people. They claim that 1 out of every 5 law officers killed are killed with Assault Weapons. LIE. 111 law officers died in 2012 in-the-line-of-duty. 46 were killed in vehicle-related ACCIDENTS; 39 in GUNFIRE-RELATED incidents; 12 Officers were killed due to health issues like heart attacks and heat exhaustion. No explanation is given for the remaining 14 officers killed in the line of duty, but THEY WERE NOT SHOT FELONIOUSLY in-the-line-of-duty. Keep in mind that a) AT LEAST 1 Officer (Lakewood P.D., Lakewood, Colorado) was killed BY HIS OWN FELLOW OFFICER; b) Law Officers carry side-arms which are described by THE LUNKS pushing this legislation as "Assault Weapons" c) a considerable number of officers ARE SHOT WITH THEIR OWN WEAPONS after the weapon is wrested from them. So out of the 39, who were shot with SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOLS, SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES, at least 1 was shot and killed by his own officers. No mention is made of ANY OFFICERS who shot and killed themselves accidentally. In 2011, an Albuquerque Police Lieutenant shot and killed himself with his own weapon, off-duty. It HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. So since only 38 officers were killed by gunfire, and there IS NO BREAKDOWN as to what specific weapon was used to kill them, we'll use Senator Feinstein's claim of 1 in 5, or 20%. Twenty percent (20%) of 39 is approximately 8 officers. So, a total of 8 officers out of 111 were ALLEGEDLY shot with "assault weapons". Please REQUEST a specific type of weapon from Senator Feinstein that was used to shoot these poor officers. I bet you that as the US Department of Justice Research Reports once again tell us: "Murders of police by offenders (with assault weapons)...are SUFFICIENTLY RARE that the available data do NOT PERMIT A RELIABLE ASSESSMENT OF WHETHER THIS (i.e., the assault weapons ban of 1994) contributed to a general reduction in gun murders of police). My arguments are based on FACTS and actual number of incidents, and not hysterics and the snide remarks of frustrated night club-tyle hecklers. THIS is why there is A BAN on federal firearms research. US Department of Justice findings and research DO NOT SUPPORT the gun grabbers. They can't have that. Since USDOJ can't be forced to cook the books, the next best thing is to DRY UP their funding so they can't produce evidence that will continue to show WHAT LIARS folks like Senator Feinstein, Mayor Bloomberg, George Soros & Company ARE. And please tell me, HOW DOES firearms registration help PREVENT FIREARMS VIOLENCE? It does not. It does facilitate firearms confiscation, when the Feinsteins, Schumers & Company decide to do away with the 2nd Amendment altogether, which is INCREMENTALLY what they want to do. Listen to them: "Banning Assault Weapons (which include rifles, shotguns and semi-auto pistols) IS A GOOD FIRST STEP". First step to what?

    This hack Democrat is using the death of her husband and son and lying about assault weapons in the process... I remembered the incident when the crazy gunman... and I stress crazy... used his 9 millimeter handgun to shoot kill people.

    It was already tried and what happened... Columbine .... There was No reduction in Homicide rates .. In Fact the Homicide Rates went UP in all cities with over 250,000 populations during the time the last ban was in effect.... So.. It's Stupid to ban a weapon that in 2011 was used in about 50 homicides and do nothing about the 1,694 homicides committed with Knives... It's A Stupid Idea..... Supported only by an Undereducated minority....and an Ignorant Press....

    You know what I can't figure out? Why they refuse to acknowledge the mental health aspect of these shootings. The police were aware that the boys involved with Columbine were planning something because they were alerted beforehand. Adam Lanza's mother knew he had issues and kept guns in her home where he could access them. The Aurora shooter told his psychiatrist that he wanted to hurt people and she ignored him. I would like for someone to explain to me how a ban will solve anything when THESE issues aren't being properly addressed?
