While the religious
right gets all the attention, the religious
left is quietly praying somewhere for victory on game day.
Democrats are more likely than Republicans to believe that "God plays a role in determining which team wins a sporting event," according to a new survey from DC's Public Religion Research Institute. 28% vs. 25%, respectively, and with a disproportionate amount of faith-on-the-field thinking taking place in the southern states among members of both parties. Those
least likely to think God has any role to play in sports outcomes reside out west, claims the report.
"Americans are less likely to believe that God plays a role in the outcome of sporting events than they are to believe God rewards religious athletes," informs the survey. "While only about 3-in-10 Americans believe that God plays a role in determining which team wins a sporting event, a majority believe that God rewards athletes who have faith with good health and success."
