Along with commercials for beer, soft drinks, and cars, an ad for gun control will run during the Superbowl.
The 30-second spot purchased by the nonprofit group Mayors Against Illegal Guns will air only in the Washington, D.C. area calling for Congress to pass universal background checks on gun purchases, news reports say. It features children as narrators while "America, the Beautiful" plays in the background. One child says: "America can do this. For us. Please." The ad ends with a message printed on the screen: "Background checks for all gun purchases. It's time."
A child in the ad points out that the National Rifle Association once supported broader background checks. "We think it's reasonable to provide mandatory, instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show," said NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre in clip from 1999 shown in the ad. "No loopholes anywhere, for anyone."
LaPierre testified last week in the Senate against background checks for all gun sales.
The White House recently unveiled a plan to reduce gun violence that includes universal background checks, and a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, following up on a promise to take meaningful action after December's mass-shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Congress is considering the measures
