NJ School Asks Girls, Not Boys, to Take Anti-Swearing Pledge

'It's unattractive when girls have potty mouths'

Not all foul mouths are created equal.

A Catholic school in New Jersey has put in place a no-cursing pledge for its students, reports NBC, with the catch being that roughly half of them are exempt from the vow. The effort to rein in swearing girls at Queen of Peace High School outside New York City was spearheaded by teacher Lori Flynn, who'd like to see the females under her tutelage "act like ladies." Especially, say school officials, because girls are the worst offenders.

"I do solemnly swear not to use profanities of any kind within the walls and properties of Queen of Peace High School," reads the pledge. "In other words, I swear not to swear: so help me God."

While there have been some complaints by female students of the unfairness of singling out their half of the school body, most seem willing to go along to get along.

"[Cursing] doesn't make you look educated," said one student subject to the pledge. "It's unattractive when girls have potty mouths," said another, who wasn't.

@thatgirl That was always my problem, I was good, treated girls with respect. Took me decades to find out the secret: don't let em know you care, then they won't leave you alone. Figured it out after noticing the girls who would call and I couldn't get rid of were the ones I acknowledged, but hardly paid attention to. Why do ya gals put us through this torture???

But think about this: it is a private school. They have the leeway to do this. If the parents disagree, they can affect a change via their money.

In the big picture, both sexes need to clean up their potty mouths.

If a female doesn't agree with cursing and she just so happens to take the pledge then more then likely the male that wants to have a relationship with said female will alter his behaviour to impress. Visa versa.

The prohibition against cursing for Christian women has a lengthy history. In fact, it dates all the way back to that awkward bedroom conversation in which Mary had to explain to Joseph that lots of women cry out, "Oh, God!" during sex and it doesn't mean she was thinking of someone else.:-)

A Catholic school in New Jersey, were I grew up in Ky they taught us that swearing was a bad thing either by girls or boys and it was followed by a trip to the principal's office, or worse. But then what do you expect from a catholic or public school in New Jersey were you have a culchure of crime and Chris Christie who looks like a bad actor out of a Soprano episode.

What a silly pledge, no one should be swearing in school. ALL should pledge to not do it. It's just as unattractive coming out of a boy's mouth as it is coming out of a girl's moutn. I'm betting this teacher is really old.

The way many boys treat girls, the girls have a REASON to swear. I don't think kids should swear in school, but what they do outside of school isn't the school's business. What happens if they swear?

If it's voluntary, "fairness" has nothing to do with it. I dislike swearing from everyone. Ladies absolutely do not swear, it's a fact that decorum is still necessary in society. Once anyone resorts to swearing they've lost the arguement, and those who drop the "f" bomb in every other sentence are displaying their ignorance. Just try to get a job while swearing during an interview, or drop the bomb during a meeting. Swearing is self limiting behavior.

As a private school, couldn't they just have a no- swearing policy on campus, and get on with it?
Doing the job parents refuse to do seems more like something the nanny state schools would deal with. But, they would have to start with the teachers!
