McCain Calls Iranian Leader A Monkey

Sen. John McCain isn't mincing words about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Arizona Republican (@SenJohnMcCain) tweeted to his nearly 1.8 million followers a recent Reuters story, "Iran launches monkey into space".

"So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space - wasn't he just there last week?" McCain wrote.

Ahmadinejad recently told the IRNA news agency that he wanted to be the first Iranian astronaut sent into space, saying he was willing to risk his life for the mission. The Iranian president said the country hopes to send an astronaut into space within the next six years.

Not everyone found McCain's sense of humor so amusing. Including a fellow Republican in Congress. "Maybe you should wisen up & not make racist jokes @SenJohnMcCain," tweeted Rep. Justin Amash (Mich.).

Amash is a second-generation Arab-American. Amash is a Ron Paul-style Republican, generally opposed to American intervention abroad. That includes confrontation with Iran.

Realizing the comment's impolitic nature, McCain quickly followed up on Twitter, "Re: Iran space tweet - lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?"

    People....we need more people are around like George Carlin or Richard Pryor....America had a sense of humor then....actually Jeff Dunham is pretty good....

    It was a joke....not racist like some of the things the Vice President Biden has said....

    @Knightmare ...lol, politicians can't even do their own jobs, much less be comedians, Biden included...as far as the ? police, I'm far from one of any kind and not quite sure how my statement would relate anyway...

    The Iranians are a proud people and for good reason. Good for them for planning an attempt to send one of theirs into space. McCain has co authored several bills that would have diminished our civil liberties while screaming unconstitutional on issues that had his disfavor has become a joke. He needs to take a good long look in the mirror and revisit his own actions before making disgraceful comments about others.

    Has John ever looked in the mirror? Apparently not, because he looks like a hamster with its jaws stuffed.

    McCain is supposed to be a professional and a leader and representative of our nation. It is inappropriate for him to make comments about other world leaders, especially those who aren't especially fond of our country to begin with. It makes us all look like idiots.

    How is it unAmerican to expect professionalism from our leaders? Would you expect such behavior in the board room? Would you expect the CEO of Coca Cola to call a CEO of the largest bottling company in China a monkey? Not if he wants to do business in this world he wouldn't.

    Grow up. It's certainly time these idiot politicians stop acting so low-rent.

    Or (since it isn't the Iranian president whose irritation is being discussed) we rightfully expect more of our representatives. McCain is, by default, one of the faces of the party and therefore our government. He knew it was inappropriate and that is why he did it. The man is lustful towards war. He is trying to antagonize Iran to increase the odds of a war.
    Personally I don't think savages is the same as monkey. One can be human and a savage because of their behavior. Islamic reps have said plenty of horrible things about Jews (and vice versa) but savages would be accurate if viewed from a standpoint sympathetic to Palestinians (once again the reverse is also true.)

    McCain is the monkey here lately and doesn't even have enough brains left to see it,most likely alzihimers setting in ,it usally takes a few years to get really bad,I think his started just before he selected Sarah Palin to run with him as vice president.

    Something most americans don't understand (but mccain knows) is that the president of iran is nothing like the position of president here. He is basically a spokesman; all major decisions are made by the ruling religious body. Aside being diplomatically irresponsible, it's just frigging stupid to insult him.

    Mccain seriously needs a psych eval; one of the first signs of dementia is a lack of boundaries.

    Sure it was funny, but just put a picture of the leader next to a picture of the monkey, and you will see the resemblance, and he did say he wanted to be the first man they send into space. Can't be too soon for me!

    As you get older, sometimes the dementia disinhibits you and you say things like that.

    No senator should ever engage in language of that sort, not even in jest. Maybe especially not in jest.

    I think it's time for Mr. McCain to retire as the hero he is, rather than the buffoon he is in danger of becoming.

    Well if you believe this country hates us cause their religion tells them to hate us cause they think we're a "Christian nation" and although the Benghazi attack didn't happen cause of the YouTube video there was riots elsewhere because of the video. If we're scared this country is getting close to developing a nuclear bomb it's safe to say they have the technology of twitter so they see this. You don't think this will piss off a country whom we claim hate us cause of our religious differences? Calling him a monkey is going to do wonders to them wanting to like us and have peace with us.

    @Libertyiskey No different from all the self-important Euros et al. who hate us because of "American arrogance and Imperialism" when if they paid attention to the average citizen and not the idiots on Facebook and Youtube they'd see most of us are too busy trying to live our own lives rather than dominate anyone, and that we, no matter political affiliation are just as sick of, and just as powerless to change, our public face to the world.
