Trump Sues Bill Maher Over $5 Million Birther Bet

Maher asked Trump to prove he's not orangutan 'spawn'

Donald Trump has sued Bill Maher over a bet requiring Trump to prove he's not the "spawn of his mother having sex with orangutan."

Maher told Jay Leno in The Tonight Show that he would donate $5 million to charity if Trump provided his birth certificate as evidence of his human parentage.

Trump says he provided "appropriate documentation...without hesitation." He is now suing Maher for the aforementioned $5 million, explaining that he feels "a major obligation to bring [the lawsuit] on behalf of the charities."

Trump says he plans to see the money go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, Hurricane Sandy Victims, March of Dimes and the Police Athletic League.

Asked if he thought Maher was kidding, Trump said, "I don't think he was joking. He said it with venom."

You know what would've made Trump hugely popular here? Is if he'd just said: "It's ok. If he doesn't want to donate, that's fine. Just shows who he is. But I will." And then donated himself. He would've won HUGE brownie points.

But instead, he's freaking out. Ironically, him acting like such a ridiculous chimp is playing into Maher's joke.

Oh, and I watched the episode of Leno and Maher's own show the week before when he first said it. He was giggling the whole time. Sometimes I wonder, but this time he was actually joking.

I remember when Donald Trump offered to donate $5 million to charity if Barack Obama revealed his birth certificate. I heard that Obama did release it to the media finally, but never heard whether Trump made good on his offer.

Well his unpopular opinion was costing NBC money. They did not fire him because of his cowardly US army/brave terrorist comment, they fired him because the show was costing more money to produce then it was making (since so many network affiliates and sponsors pulled their support for his show).

It's hard to see this as anything more than Mr Trump trying to snag the spotlight again - and just when America was getting used to him being out of it.

The suit is baseless and won't produce much more than some press for Mr Trump. Mr Maher can reasonably claim his comment was satire and he has precedent in his favor: People v. Larry Flynt.

This lawsuit has no grounds and if a judge has any sense will throw it out immediately. It was some comment, most likely a joke, made on a late night TV show. Not exactly like it's some binding contract.
