At least 20 House Democrats are planning to bring people harmed by gun violence as their guests to attend President Obama's State of the Union Address next week.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced Friday that she invited a fourth grader from Newtown, Conn., and her mother, to the Feb. 12 event. The student doesn't attend Sandy Hook Elementary School, the site of the December mass-shooting that took the lives of 20 children and sparked the nation to debate the need for new gun regulations. She attends a nearby school and had written Pelosi a letter urging Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, the Huffington Post reports.

It's a campaign that got started last month when five House Democrats sent a letter urging all lawmakers in their party to invite people touched by gun violence to the president's annual address to the nation. "It is our hope that their presence in the House gallery will send a strong message that it is long past time to act," the letter said, Politico reports.

President Obama recently announced a comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence that includes universal background checks and banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, following up on a promise to take meaningful action after the elementary school massacre. Congress is considering the measures.

    Shows again what a bunch of morons the Liberal Loons of the Left are. Besides, what they are after is not going to happen. The Senate can't even pass the gun ban with a Democrat majority, much less the House.

    There is a political gain to exploiting the cure for cancer... radiation therapy came out of the need to dispose of waste from nuclear weapons production... there are far more effective treatments and cures for cancer that are less harmful to the patient, but that science is stifled for political reasons. There is also political gain for opposing the legalization of marijuana and the FDA approval of herbal remedies. Big Pharma hates the competition so it gives alot of money to support politicians who promise to vote in their financial favor.

    @DogLady_1 I worked with oncologists for many years. Your conspiracy theory has no merit. Have you ever heard of Tumor Board? Each patient's disease status, staging, prognosis and treatment plan are reviewed meticulously. NO oncologist would expose a patient to radiation therapy unless there was clear evidence that it would benefit the patient.

    Politicians need a 12 step program to overcome their addiction to power & control. Its not about kids or guns. Its about their desire for control because they know better than you. There are things that they can and should control like their spending and creating a budget etc...and there are things beyond their control like irrational mentally ill people doing irrational acts.

Which, BTW, repeats OVER AND OVER AGAIN, "the banned weapons and magazines were rarely used to commit murders in this country"; "were used only rarely in gun crimes before the ban", etc. You see, when the statistics don't back the claims of the gun-grabbers, and the USDOJ can't be made to knuckle under and cook their books, then the next best thing for the gun-grabbers is to BAN FIREARMS RESEARCH so your own government agencies don't make you out to be a liar, and exploit a handful of isolated, albeit horrific tragedies to begin on the incremental disarmament of The American People, little by little.     Of course it's exploitation. All of the world is exploitation. When you put a sexy model on the hood of a car to sell the car what you are telling geeks is that "buy this car and you get women like this" when in fact geeks don't and girls like that don't go for guys in Camarys. This is nothing but business as usual. If the right could figure out a way to bring in 20 guys who have blasted home invaders I'm sure they'll be there. Cue Dueling Banjos.

    If the message was to reduce the causes of violence without interfering with the right to bear arms, I would support such a maneuver... but I do not support "gun control" legislation. If we do not address the societal conditions that are creating the violence, it's just feel good legislation that will accomplish nothing. Our goal should be to reduce the number of victims of violence, not the number of guns. As long as that is their only goal, they are missing the mark entirely.

    It's sad the Democrats never speak to the thousands of women harmed with severe depression from Abortions they had. The hypocrisy of Democrat compassion for hurting folks when it suits their agenda is truly amazing. If an Ambassador should die at the hands of terrorists, it's ok to campaign in Las Vegas the day after. Wow, Obama's compassion is awe inspiring is it not?

    So they are depressed. Abortion carries with it very emotional baggage. However, they made a choice to abort for practical reasons, which they have decided is in their best interest. They would likely be even more depressed being saddled with an infant they decided they should not have.

    It is all about the class warfare which started before the Regan era. The only way the Democrats and the unions can enforce it is through a police state. Since they cannot do it without violating the 2nd ammendant they are trying to use the UN. They raise our taxes and give more to other countries. If they are so concerned with the health and welfare of America maybe the should start within our own states.

    Of course they are; it's what Democrats do, exploit people for political gain. It will not change the minds of thinking people who understand that these people on display suffered from "gun violence" because they were UNarmed when they were attacked. In years past the exploitation of people has included outright fraud on the part of the Democrats. We will undoubtedly see that again too.

    Playing to people's sympathy is not the way to get things done! Emotions are not the way to run our country. I'm sorry these people were affected by gun violence, but what does a fourth grader that wasn't even at Sandyhook know? Only what her parents and teacher told her. The time is now to think common sense. Our second ammendment rights are not to be infringed upon! It doesn't matter what emotions are involved. I've had a gun held to my head. You know what difference that made to me? That I should have a gun of my own to keep that from ever happening to me again. If I'd had a gun pointing back at him, he could have never grabbed me and spun me around with my back on his body with his gun at my head. Not that we should restrict guns to law abiding citizens. Law or not, the bad guy is going to have whatever gun he wants. It does not matter if the gun he has is illegal. He got it illegally in the first place! To remain law abiding citizens just means the criminals will have us at a disadvantage. Anyone who believes new legislation is going to stop gun violence is sadly mistaken. They will be able to get any gun they want. Gangs have fully automatic machine guns. Those have been illegal forever, didn't stop them from getting and using them. The coincidence of so much gun violence right when our government was already preparing legislation for gun control is staggering. It almost seems too coincidental, but I don't think our own government would actually kill people to get their gun control. Right now I am trying to get an AR15 because the media coverage of it makes it look like a good gun to have in my home for defense of my child and myself. Light weight, low recoil, the ability to keep shooting until an aggressive person that broke into my house goes down and the stock folds down to make it easier for me to handle. I'm not very big. Right now I have two hand guns I can use for protection. One is a semi-automatic American Eagle .357. The other is a small .357 revolver. I like the ability to keep shooting with the first gun and the ease of use of the other. But when it comes to the safety of my little girl and myself, I'll deal with the strength it takes to control the semi-automatic American Eagle .357 because of the ability to keep shooting faster until the criminal goes down. Faster shooting with more ammo is preferable to me than slower shooting and less ammo. I prefer not to shoot to kill. Just reduce him from being a threat intil the police arrive. I do not want to ever kill someone, but I will to protect my daughter. And no, she cannot get to the guns. She doesn't even know they exist. Both have trigger locks, but my preferable guns clip is full and right beside the gun. The trigger lock key stays on me. My daughter thinks the key around my neck at night is the key to my heart. Actually it partly is because it is part of the way I keep my baby safe.

    Here's s thought.... provide some counseling for those affected, that would be more appropriate than parading them in front of people who are just using the tragedies that happened to these poor people for pure political gain!
