NFL Stars Promote Gun Control in New Ad

"How many more schools...movie theaters...street corners?" they ask.

A handful of NFL stars, including Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin, have teamed up in a whole 'nother way to support gun control in a new ad from Mayors Against Illegal Guns, reports Politico. The ad, which also speaks to their own occupational experience with the gun issue - "how many more half-time moments of silence?" - ends with a plea for public change: "It's time for our leaders to do something."

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who along with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg represents the northeast liberal tinge to the "Mayors Against..." campaign, touts the celebrity athletes' contribution:

We are grateful that these sports heroes - who are also fathers, brothers and uncles - are choosing to speak out. We need every voice to be heard to keep the pressure on Congress to pass legislation that will save American lives and make our neighborhoods safer.

    Explain to me please, how are these feel good law makers going to get the criminals to abide by their gun control laws.

    What do you mean by that? Why don't you worry about your job. We got this. Like the mans opinion don't matter. Like your opinion is all righteous and all knowing. You're not God. As long, as someone is not causing you harm. You should be happy. Yes, guns is an important issue. I'm all for it. But, I understand others view points. Just like you have every right to express yours. But, know your vote isn't the only one that matters. No one should depend on anyone to speak and vote for them. It's your right, Mr. Sanders to be able to speak up. Do your thing. If you don't have a legally registered gun it's a problem.

    @Brownie That's the whole point though, or did you not notice that some of the new laws being promoted in California would ban EXISTING LEGALLY REGISTERED weapons? And yeah, NFL players like all celebrities can keep their traps shut about gun control, considering many of them still roll in the same circles in which gun violence is a problem. Plaxico Burress anyone? And before you jump up my butt about using a single example, many people in favor of gun control automatically assume ANYONE who owns guns is a "gun nut".

    Not sure good question. If not they should, especially since apparently SOP for liberals is to kiss their ass while telling them it's not their fault for what they did... it's societies for driving them to do it. Ahh, how sad.

    If these mayors have found a way to convince criminals to start obeying the laws and put away their already illegal guns I'd love to hear it. Otherwise what we have here is mere "See how much we care?" propaganda, and zero solutions. There will always be a black market for firearms for criminals.

    But assault weapons are so much Fun!!!!!!! It's just inconvenient that people keep getting slaughtered with them. Playing with these toys is my RIGHT!!!!! It's the only way I can feel like a tough guy. Without my guns I'm such a loser (sniffle).

    @NormalFlora You know it's your right not to own guns just as it's mine to own. And yes shooting is fun just like any other sport and just like any other sport there are dangers involved. Guns are'nt toys and it's not the only way to feel like a tough guy, i really don't know anyone in my circle of friends who feels like a tough guy when they pick up a gun to target shoot, skeet shoot, trap shoot or whatever. Maybe we should ban shooting in the Olympics, i'm sure that would make you happy! You sound like the loser in this debate because you only see things one way YOURS!

    @NormalFlora Ok so I read the statement you endorsed about abortion and it can be summarized as followed "if you don't want one don't get one." That should be a fair stance on these guns, if you don't want one don't get one. If you don't want an abortion don't get one. I fail to see why the logic only works at one of them. These assault weapons you speak of our responsible for a fraction of the crime since all statistics I've seen show handguns are the ones used most, even on mother jones website it showed that. You can pull the ad hominems out and make people look like they're compensating but it ony looks like your projecting. I don't own any assault weapons and don't think they should be banned, I dont smoke pot but also think it should be legal. Isn't freedom and liberty a good thing for all? Why can't we just uphold the laws we have, it's illegal to murder no matter what weapon and just about every weapon is designed to kill and/or seriously injur including knives, bow n arrows, even the guns you aren't advocating for the banning of, so why shouldn't those be banned as well as assault weapons?

    hero's what a joke! As for Deion Sanders he comparable to an ambulance chasing lawyer, any time there's a camera around he's there. Who really cares what these overpayed puppets think anyway!

    I wish we could come together on this, everybody stop the madness! Enforce the laws already in place, keep the violent criminals in jail instead of nonviolent. Then let's start a realistic conversation about making sure that we keeps guns away from the hands of people who should never have access them and that the ones who do have access know how to use & store them safely.

    I was hoping this was a joke, but obviously not. I find it funny all the could get was three ex-Cowboys and Faulk. Two of them are so full of themselves it is no surprise they did the ad. Smith and Faulk were great backs, but need to keep to the jock stuff and leave the real decisions to the public.

    Just a bunch NFL stars wanting to get their cut of the action courtesy of Sandy Hook tragedy. In fact, all I see is a bunch of people just eagerly awaiting their paychecks when they shat out these ads. They don't care.

    The key here is illegal guns. No legislation is going to affect illegal guns. They are obtained illegally in the first place. The black market will just grow and become more profitable. How do you think gangs have obtained fully automatic machine guns? The only thing more legislation will do is put law abiding citizens at an even more disadvantage! We already have gun laws that are rarely enforced. Sure, give me a bigger background check. That will not affect me. Take 100 round magazines, smaller ones can be reloaded in 2 to 5 seconds. Do not take semi-automatic weapons from law abiding citizens. That's just going to put us at a greater disadvantage. I promise the criminal will have whatever gun he so chooses!
