May 1 LEC v I have mixed feelings I don't know... The south keeps reliving its lost past though these symbols but it can't be a good thing as decedents of the former slaves to be constantly reminded of that time. So they should voluntarily rename and/or take down monuments and statutes that are frankly, meant to remind blacks they were once slaves. r12 replies Post
May 2 ACTSmom Baloney....we don't relive the past, but quit trying to change history. Too much has already been changed via text books so that our younger generations don't even know the real history of the US. Post @ACTSmom
May 8 LEC @Bob72370 You only glorify the wins.. has the south rewritten history? Or is the civil war still not settled? Post @LEC
May 8 Bob72370 @LEC Wins for who? Every American lost in the Civil War. Shiloh, Antietam, Bull Run and all the rest saw brothers against brothers, neighbors against neighbors. Every American lost in each and every battle. I do not glorify the wins, the cost to our country was horrific, and we should all learn from our battles. Revising history by striking the names of parks is wrong no matter which side "won". Post @Bob72370
Apr 30 Concerned_Cit v No, they shouldn't History should not be rewritten to please the PC revisionists. History is not always pretty, and should be preserved, so that future generations can learn from it. There is a reason parks were named after certain people, even if they were named 100 years after the fact, and that is part of history as well. A flipside question, should parks named after Yankee's be renamed? There are a bunch of them all over the country as well, yet Yankee generals and officers murdered men, women, and children on purpose in their campaigns during and after the Civil War. Grant, one of the main generals of the northern army declared total war on southerners, whether they supported the Co... B4 r1 reply e1 endorsed Post

Mar '13 GeorgiaSean7 v No, they shouldn't No, and as a Georgian and a Southerner, I don't feel that a piece of history needs to be removed at an exorbitant cost to the tax payers. If it offends people, we have names parks, train stations, and roads after people such as Martin Luther King Jr. Our mayor here in Atlanta is Kasim Reed, an African American gentleman from New Jersey. There has to be a compromise but everyone needs to focus on important issues, and stop thinking that if a park is named "Robert E. Lee Hill," that we are being racist. Well we are not I assure you. If that is what is causing anxiety in many people's lives, then they need to find a hobby or something. Post
u Feb '13 tvg138 v No, they shouldn't If we did this we'd be like the Germans covering up what the nazi's did to the Jews. It's ok to fail and be ashamed of the wrongs we do. That's how we learn and prevent the mistakes that were made, don't happen again. Keep history alive. Post

Feb '13 maddogusn v No, they shouldn't Are we now in the business of erasing our own history? If your willing start down that road why not dig up all the confederate war dead and dump them at sea, don't forget to demolish the plantations and cemeteries in the south and parts of Arlington. Then while your at it erase the civil war from the history books, then you can start working on that pesky holocaust thing. Hey it's all for the good of political correctness....right? Post

Feb '13 Woody20164 v No, they shouldn't First, the question is loaded. These parks don't necessarily "honor" the Confederacy, rather, they commemorate it. It is important that we remember. It is sad but true that most often, history is written by the winners. Despite being on the losing end of the war (and regardless of the particular issue), the confederacy fought for what they considered important principles of the constitution, States' rights without oppressive Federal involvement. Too bad more states don't feel that way now. B4 r2 replies e22 endorsed Post

Feb '13 Hillbillyhunny What about racisim against whites? Thats all you see and hear these days!! If we all spoke up as OTHERS i.e BLACKS when offened by being constanly reminded of the stuff our ancestors did or what we had no control of, it may change. Furthermore we (whites) were slaves first read your history books and get back with me beter yet read your Bible and get back with me. Im sick of hearing poor poor black man. Moreover, where is our WHITE history month? B8 Post @Hillbillyhunny
Feb '13 PNWest v Yes, they should The Confederacy was responsible for the deaths of at least 620,000 Americans. Their main issue was supporting slavery. To quote Confederate States Vice President Alexander Stephens, "the cornerstone of the new government rests upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slaveryâsubordination to the superior raceâis his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth". To name public parks after confederate heroes is wrong. u Feb '13 fancy1 @Hillbillyhunny I agree with you 100%! I don't own slaves, my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents did not own slaves. But we are having it thrown up in our face constantly. Blacks can say and get away with anything against whites but you let a white person stand up for themselves and you get stupid remarks like the ones above. If you live in the south, the blacks act totally different than the ones up north. B5 Post @fancy1
