For those who haven't heard, neurosurgeon Ben Carson caused quite a stir last Thursday at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in DC with a conservative speech that not only deployed the "political correctness" concept, but called for health savings accounts, a policy proposal at odds with the President's Affordable Care Act.
Carson, whose conservative credentials appear solid despite his
remark that the American bald eagle needs both a "right wing" and a "left wing" to take flight, surprised folks with a speech supporting a flat tax among other things. But it was his call for a more market-oriented health policy that was likely the biggest thorn in the side of President Obama, who some
claim was "upstaged" by Carson:
"For...people indigent who don't have any money, we can make contributions to their HSA each month because we already have this huge pot of money,"
explained Carson. "Instead of sending it to some bureaucracy, let's put it in their HSAs."
Among those who found Carson's speech disagreeable was Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who
claimed the speech displayed an "empathy gap" between conservatives and the American people:
"I think it's really not really an appropriate place to make this kind of political speech and to invoke God as his support for that kind of view," said Schakowsky, whose sentiments were shared by many of her fellow Democrats. "I think it's reflective of where many of the Republicans and Tea Parties are right now, that we need to have an economy that works for everyone."
